One of the largest wireless carriers in the United States turned to Altoros to reduce release cycles, automate platform upgrades, and enforce security.

Automating Platform Upgrades and Reducing Release Cycles for a Telecommunication Provider

About the project

Brief results of the collaboration:

  • With automated platform upgrades, the customer reduced release cycles from months to less than a week.
  • Thanks to the Concourse CI–based pipeline, the customer was able to synchronize updates across 14 environments (production, development, and testing).
  • The customer managed to containerize 100+ stateful applications and enable them on VMware Tanzu (PCF) without downtime and in a secure manner.

The customer

Сounting 40,000+ employees, the customer is one of the largest wireless network operators in the USA. With 230+ million of subscribers, the organization operates in 16 countries across Europe and North America. The company provides wireless voice and data services.

The need

Due to manual processes, the customer was experiencing a year delay across platform upgrades, including critical security patches, to its PCF deployment. Furthermore, the customer aimed at containerizing around 100+ stateful applications and enabling them on PCF.

Relying on expertise at Altoros, the customer wanted to achieve full automation across platform upgrades and containerization, while enforcing security and reducing release cycles.

The challenges

Under the project, the team at Altoros had to address the following issues:

  • It was important to ensure automation synchronization across 14 production, development, and testing environments.
  • The containerization of 100+ applications and their further enablement on VMware Tanzu had to be performed without downtime.
  • With a significant delay in patching common vulnerabilities and exposures, additional security means needed to be implemented.

The solution

Employing Concourse, developers at Altoros built an automation pipeline that allowed for applying due platform upgrades to 14 production, development, and testing environments in a synchronized manner. Thanks to this, release cycles were reduced from months to less than a week.

By utilizing VMware Enterprise PKS1 (PKS), our engineers containerized 100+ stateful applications. With Concourse and BOSH Backup and Restore, the team at Altoros ensured automation across containerization and further enablement of the applications on PCF without downtime. To enforce security across the delivered PKS cluster, experts at Altoros implemented custom-built mutating and validating admission control webhooks.

The outcome

Collaborating with Altoros, the customer achieved full automation across platform upgrades for 14 production, development, and testing environments. As a result, the company caught up with a year delay in updates (including critical security patches) and reduced release cycles from months to less than a week. With enforced security, the organization also containerized 100+ stateful applications in an automated way and enabled them on PCF without downtime.
