A Canadian bank sought assistance in enabling business-critical applications on VMware Tanzu and accelerating development.

Migrating Banking Applications to VMware Tanzu

About the project

Brief results of the collaboration:

  • The customer moved 6 applications (for online lending, digital banking, mortgage underwriting, deposit services, risk rating, and ETL processing) to VMware Tanzu.
  • The migrated applications are compliant with the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC) security regulations.
  • By containerizing the applications previously run on virtual machines, the customer significantly reduced time spent on deployment, release, and update cycles.

The customer

Based in Canada, the bank provides residential and commercial real estate lending services. The organization employs over 800 workers and manages more than $30 billion in total assets.

The need

The customer was mostly outsourcing application development to multiple vendors. This resulted in time-consuming and cost-prohibitive releases, maintenance, and support.

Collaborating with Altoros, the company wanted to improve its in-house software development through the adoption of a cloud-native platform.

The challenge

Under the project, the team at Altoros had to address the following issues:

  • While enabling applications on VMware Tanzu, it was important to ensure security compliance with the CDIC regulations.
  • With no monitoring across existing applications, the customer’s team had to analyze redundant logs and metrics.
  • Manual debugging and troubleshooting was time-consuming and error-prone.

The solution

Developers at Altoros migrated 6 business-critical applications—for online lending, digital banking, mortgage underwriting, deposit services, risk rating, and ETL processing—to VMware Tanzu.

To enforce security and achieve compliance with the financial regulations, our engineers delivered such modules as a compliance scanner, a file integrity monitor, an antivirus scanner, and isolation segments.

By containerizing the applications previously deployed on virtual machines, the team at Altoros accelerated deployment, release, and update cycles.

To condense verbose logs and metrics emitted by applications, our experts created custom Graylog-based filters and dashboards. Then, developers at Altoros implemented Micrometer to automate debugging and troubleshooting.

Finally, engineers at Altoros assisted the customer’s in-house team in deploying, configuring, managing, maintaining, and troubleshooting CI/CD pipelines with Jenkins and Concourse. By integrating the pipeline with JFrog Artifactory and GitLab, our team enabled continuous delivery and version control.

The outcome

Partnering with Altoros, the customer migrated 6 of its business-critical applications to VMware Tanzu, while achieving compliance with the CDIC regulations. Through the adoption of a cloud-native platform, the company drastically reduced costs and time efforts incurred by outsourcing development. By containerizing the applications, the company accelerated deployment, release, and update cycles.
