On November 14, 2022, Microsoft introduced its <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.microsoft.com\/blog\/2022\/11\/14\/introducing-the-microsoft-supply-chain-platform-a-new-approach-to-designing-supply-chains-for-agility-automation-and-sustainability\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Supply Chain Platform<\/a> enabling organizations such as Daimler to improve product traceability. Two weeks later, Amazon announced <a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/blogs\/business-productivity\/aws-announces-aws-supply-chain\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AWS Supply Chain<\/a> as a response to Microsoft\u2019s release. Even though Amazon\u2019s platform is currently available in preview, and an enterprise-ready version will be expected later, why is the competition so high and time-sensitive?<\/p>\n<p>You, probably, remember the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2021_Suez_Canal_obstruction\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Suez Canal obstruction<\/a> in March 2021, when a 400-meter vessel got stuck and single-handedly disrupted the global supply chain. The incident happened in the middle of the COVID pandemic, when most of the industries were facing delays and shortages. After analyzing the situation, Bain &amp; Company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bain.com\/insights\/traceability-the-next-supply-chain-revolution\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">suggested<\/a> that enterprises with enabled product\/materials tracking could minimize losses, being able to find alternative suppliers.<\/p>\n<p>However, a study by Deloitte published in October 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/content\/dam\/Deloitte\/uk\/Documents\/consultancy\/deloitte-uk-procurement-and-supply-chain-resilience.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">highlights<\/a> the scale of manufacturers&#8217; visibility issues. Only 13% of respondents could \u201cfully map their supply chain networks,\u201d with 72% having partial or limited visibility beyond their \u201ctier-2\u201d network. Another recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ey.com\/en_gl\/supply-chain\/how-covid-19-impacted-supply-chains-and-what-comes-next\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a> from EY confirmed that only 37% of respondents have experienced \u201cincreasing visibility\u201d in 2022.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/iot-manufacturing-supply-chain-traceability-challenges-limited-network-visibility.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/iot-manufacturing-supply-chain-traceability-challenges-limited-network-visibility-1024x567.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-67298\" \/><\/a><small>Limited supply chain visibility is common in 2022 (source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/content\/dam\/Deloitte\/uk\/Documents\/consultancy\/deloitte-uk-procurement-and-supply-chain-resilience.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Deloitte<\/a>)<\/small><\/center><\/p>\n<p>So, why do companies pursue supply chain traceability and visibility? For instance, for the suppliers in the life sciences industry, Everest Group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everestgrp.com\/healthcare-life-sciences\/life-sciences-supply-chain-visibility-a-strong-link-in-the-chain-blog.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">discovered<\/a> the following needs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 6px;\">minimizing product loss and theft<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 6px;\">recall procedures for expired or noncompliant goods<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 6px;\">fighting fraud and counterfeit products<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 6px;\">compliance (e.g., see the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-supply-chain-integrity\/drug-supply-chain-security-act-dscsa\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Drug Supply Chain Security Act<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>sustainability requirements (to track packaging waste \/ emissions and identify eco-friendly routes)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, the transparent flow of goods helps to design just-in-time (or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lean_manufacturing\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lean<\/a>) manufacturing, reducing warehousing expenses. It\u2019s no surprise that increasing efficiency, reskilling the workforce, and improving visibility are the top priorities for supply chain executives, according to an EY <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ey.com\/en_gl\/supply-chain\/how-covid-19-impacted-supply-chains-and-what-comes-next\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a> (January 2023).<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/iot-manufacturing-supply-chain-traceability-challenges-visibility-is-a-top-priority-scaled-1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/iot-manufacturing-supply-chain-traceability-challenges-visibility-is-a-top-priority-scaled-1-1024x531.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-67339\" \/><\/a><small>Visibility is among top 3 priorities for supply chain executives (source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ey.com\/en_gl\/supply-chain\/how-covid-19-impacted-supply-chains-and-what-comes-next\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">EY<\/a>)<\/small><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Though funding and the lack of a clear strategy are obvious bottlenecks for implementing supply chain traceability, the process is not simple for those who have started it, too. In the following sections, we\u2019ll cover the major complexities of product tracing implementation and provide potential guidelines to address the issues.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Track-and-trace_data_reliability\"><\/span>1. Track-and-trace data reliability<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The process of identifying raw materials or manufactured products and then monitoring their location or movement is generally called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Track_and_trace\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">track and trace<\/a>.\u201d The Internet of Things (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/tag\/iot\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">IoT<\/a>) platforms collect necessary data via smart devices and then transmit it for analysis or reporting. Sensors, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/GPS_tracking_unit\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GPS trackers<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Radio-frequency_identification\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">RFID<\/a> tags provide location data, being distributed across factories, warehouses, and vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>However, these devices are not 100% perfect and may introduce some fraction of error\u2014due to inaccurate mounting, heating\/freezing, aging, or malfunction. On a large scale, with a myriad of trackers, this may bring in a series of unreliable records, leading to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Concept_drift\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">concept drift<\/a> and \u201cdirty data.\u201d The issue escalates in the case of low-cost devices.<\/p>\n<p>Another problem is that barcode readers scan the packaging, but not the product itself. Therefore, scanning the packaging doesn\u2019t guarantee that the sensitive\/fragile product (such as ice-cream or wine) has arrived safe. What type of devices should you purchase? How much data to collect to ensure the information is reliable enough? How to enable traceability within factories or other facilities where GPS is unavailable?<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, the costly track-and-trace implementation is not an obvious process and requires thorough planning upfront and designing an ROI-driven strategy. The World Economic Forum (WEF) and Bain &amp; Company <a href=\"https:\/\/www3.weforum.org\/docs\/WEF_Digital_Traceability_2021.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recommend<\/a> focusing on a pilot for specific opportunities that will create immediate value and then expand, amplifying the results.<\/p>\n<p>On a large scale, to ensure the health of IoT equipment, one can rely on a device management platform. This solution performs a variety of supervision tasks remotely\u2014including malfunction detection and firmware updates. (The <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.aws.amazon.com\/iot\/latest\/fleethubuserguide\/what-is-aws-iot-monitor-how-it-works.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AWS IoT Device Management<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/iot-hub\/iot-hub-device-management-overview\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Azure IoT Hub<\/a> documentation describe similar services available on the two major cloud platforms.) It\u2019s also worth investing into <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anomaly_detection\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">anomaly detection<\/a> to spot outliers or fraudulent activities, triggering proper actions, such as device maintenance or access denial.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/iot-manufacturing-supply-chain-sample-architectire-for-track-and-trace.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/iot-manufacturing-supply-chain-sample-architectire-for-track-and-trace-1024x657.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-67311\" \/><\/a><small>A sample IoT-based architecture for track and trace (source: <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/architecture\/solution-ideas\/articles\/supply-chain-track-and-trace\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft<\/a>)<\/small><\/center><\/p>\n<p>In addition to location data, a supplier may also need to track additional parameters for food, medicine, and other sensitive products. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoroslabs.com\/portfolio\/portfolio_building-a-cold-chain-delivery-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cold-chain delivery<\/a> monitoring can verify whether the temperature and humidity were within the limits during shipments, which is essential for dairy products and pharmaceuticals. A viable method to ensure the safe transportation of fragile goods (such as glass) involves installing and utilizing vibration sensors within containers. To increase the reliability of product tracing or double-check weight, a company may consider integrating digital scales and computer vision (see the next section).<\/p>\n<p>Finally, in facilities where GPS fails to work, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indoor_positioning_system\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">indoor positioning<\/a> may also be helpful.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Manual_operations_increase_errors_delays_and_costs\"><\/span>2. Manual operations increase errors, delays, and costs<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Many procedures enabling supply chain traceability in manufacturing are performed manually, adding the burden to data reliability. For instance, track-and-trace operations involve scanning thousands of products or parcels with handheld devices, while invoice data is manually entered into corporate systems. This method is labor-intensive, time-consuming, and prone to human error. Such issues can snowball into multiple inaccuracies and delays\u2014resulting in lost or returned products and unreliable forecasts or analytics\u2014which eventually escalates costs.<\/p>\n<p>To streamline product traceability where manual efforts are required, a company should automate as many processes as possible and label all the physical items involved. Barcodes, QR codes, and computer vision can be applied to both goods and pallets used for transportation. To make code scanning more accessible and reduce the costs, distributors might replace professional handheld devices with regular mobile apps.<\/p>\n<p>Additional tools and devices for traceability within factories or warehouses may monitor pick\/pack operations to ensure each carton contains the right goods in the correct amount. Microsoft <a href=\"https:\/\/techcommunity.microsoft.com\/t5\/azure-marketplace-blog\/the-growing-use-cases-for-computer-vision-in-factories\/ba-p\/3032246\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explains<\/a> that we can find similar mechanisms in conveyor belts with integrated sensors and computer-vision features. Other companies opt for picking carts with built-in scales.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/iot-manufacturing-supply-chain-traceability-as-an-end-to-end-process.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/iot-manufacturing-supply-chain-traceability-as-an-end-to-end-process-1024x488.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-67310\" \/><\/a><small>Supply chain traceability as an end-to-end process (source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everestgrp.com\/healthcare-life-sciences\/life-sciences-supply-chain-visibility-a-strong-link-in-the-chain-blog.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Everest Group<\/a>)<\/small><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Gartner also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\/supply-chain\/trends\/supply-chain-ai\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">predicts<\/a> that \u201cartificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) will have the greatest impact on the supply chain industry through 2025.\u201d Some of the supply chain scenarios will include <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robotic_process_automation\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">RPA<\/a> for reducing paperwork (digitizing invoices with object recognition) and automatically processing orders.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_The_huge_amount_of_interconnected_data\"><\/span>3. The huge amount of interconnected data<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When implemented, though, traceability software, barcode readers, and IoT sensors generate massive streams of real-time data coming from factories, warehouses, vehicles, etc. The problems with data management start from the very beginning\u2014collection\u2014and escalate as the system operates.<\/p>\n<p>First, supply chain data can be very heterogeneous in terms of type (material volumes, shipment dates, etc.) and source (IoT sensors, ERP systems, etc.). Second, manufacturers may deal with both structured and unstructured data (varying from dates in a delivery schedule to satellite imagery for route optimization). Third, seasonal \/ holiday spikes in demand contribute to peak data loads that can put a strain on logistics software.
