In 2019, the park welcomed over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1034399\/number-of-visitors-to-pompeii-herculaneum-and-torre-annunziata-italy\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">3.8 million<\/a> tourists. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and the government-mandated lockdowns began, Pompeii, like many other tourist attractions in the world, closed its doors for safety reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Lockdowns started to ease up in mid 2020, bringing the possibility for the park to reopen. To do so, managers of the museum required a solution that would keep visitors safe by ensuring social distancing to avoid any COVID-19 outbreaks.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Archeological-Park-of-Pompeii-Digital-Transformation-Kubernetes-Oracle-OCI-cloud-native-tourist-statistics-2019-2020.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Archeological-Park-of-Pompeii-Digital-Transformation-Kubernetes-Oracle-OCI-cloud-native-tourist-statistics-2019-2020-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-65821\" \/><\/a><small>2.8 million tourists paid to visit in 2019 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1034399\/number-of-visitors-to-pompeii-herculaneum-and-torre-annunziata-italy\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Image credit<\/a>)<\/small><\/center><\/p>\n<p>For the Archeological Park of Pompeii to reopen, managers came up with three critical goals.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">Use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/tag\/cloud-native\/\">cloud-native technologies<\/a> to facilitate park operations, visitor experience, and ticketing, reducing the need for on-premises IT systems<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">Choose an implementation partner to build a cloud-native, mobile solution, so managers can focus on day-to-day operations of the park and not IT<\/li>\n<li>Keep visitors safe through effective social distancing and divert foot traffic away from tourist hotspots<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"MyPompeii_app\"><\/span>MyPompeii app<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The data layer of the Pompeii platform uses Oracle Autonomous Database, which includes a built-in spatial feature for managing site map, itineraries, and geolocalization for points of interest. This way, the <a href=\"http:\/\/pompeiisites.org\/en\/visiting-info\/mypompeii-the-application-which-allows-one-to-visit-the-archaeological-site-in-safety\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">MyPompeii<\/a> mobile app can provide tourists with a real-time map, helping them to follow social distancing protocols, noted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/fayefarhanghutsell\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Faye Farhang-Hutsell<\/a>, Director of IaaS Product Marketing at Oracle.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_65850\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Faye-Farhang-Hutsell.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65850\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Faye-Farhang-Hutsell-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-65850\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-65850\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><small>Faye Farhang-Hutsell<\/small><\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Pompeii platform was built entirely on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) with cloud-native, microservices, and API-first principles in mind.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;MyPompeii helps tourists to visualize all points of interest, get more complete information, and find first-aid stations, refreshment stands, key rest areas in addition to other facilities. The app also supplements many safety initiatives that the park instituted to allow reopening during the pandemic.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>\u2014Faye Farhang-Hutsell, Oracle<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>After visits, tourists can leave comments and feedback about their experience through MyPompeii. Input from tourists are all stored within the Oracle Blockchain Platform, guaranteeing transparency and immutability.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Archeological-Park-of-Pompeii-Italy-Digital-Transformation-Kubernetes-Oracle-OCI-cloud-native-mobile-app.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Archeological-Park-of-Pompeii-Italy-Digital-Transformation-Kubernetes-Oracle-OCI-cloud-native-mobile-app-1024x575.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-65888\" \/><\/a><small>MyPompeii enabled self-guided tours (<a href=\"https:\/\/static.sched.com\/hosted_files\/kccncna2021\/0a\/Oracle-Pompeii-Cloud-Native-Mobile%20App.pdf\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Image credit<\/a>)<\/small><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Custom APIs powered by Oracle Mobile Hub are implemented on top of the Pompeii platform to minimize the orchestration needed on the mobile app. Additionally, all media content used by MyPompeii is stored in Oracle Content and Experience, which serves as a headless content management system (CMS).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Building_on_top_of_Kubernetes\"><\/span>Building on top of Kubernetes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>At the KubeCon and Cloud Native Conference North America 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/akshaisarathy\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Akshai Parthasarathy<\/a>, Director of Product Marketing at Oracle, disclosed some implementation details around the mobile app and the platform. In particular, he shared how the system relies on the orchestration provided by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/tag\/kubernetes\/\">Kubernetes<\/a> (<b>Oracle Container Engine for Kubernetes<\/b> implementation) and the use of APIs.<\/p>\n<p>Custom APIs were implemented in Java using Helidon 2.0 and had the following features:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">APIs are deployed as Docker containers on Oracle Cloud Engine for Kubernetes, using multiple replicas and autoscaling.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">API instances are balanced with OCI Flexible Load Balancing.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">APIs are publicly exposed through the OCI API Gateway and are secured using a JSON Web Token\u2013based scheme for authentication and authorization.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">Application data handled by the API is stored using an Oracle Autonomous Transaction Processing instance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Archeological-Park-of-Pompeii-Italy-Digital-Transformation-Kubernetes-Oracle-OCI-cloud-native-platform.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Archeological-Park-of-Pompeii-Italy-Digital-Transformation-Kubernetes-Oracle-OCI-cloud-native-platform-1024x575.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-65887\" \/><\/a><small>The Pompeii cloud-native platform (<a href=\"https:\/\/static.sched.com\/hosted_files\/kccncna2021\/0a\/Oracle-Pompeii-Cloud-Native-Mobile%20App.pdf\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Image credit<\/a>)<\/small><\/center><\/p>\n<p>To avoid tight coupling between API implementations, the Pompeii platform relied on OCI Notifications to send events, when specific conditions are met. Notifications are implemented through the following steps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">Relevant APIs use the OCI Java SDK to act as OCI Notifications publishers.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">A custom HTTPs subscriber gets the messages and forwards push notifications to mobile phones.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">Based on the OCI Notifications message payload, a different text in multiple languages is used as push notifications.<\/li>\n<div id=\"attachment_65831\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Akshai-Parthasarathy.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65831\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Akshai-Parthasarathy-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-65831\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-65831\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><small>Akshai Parthasarathy<\/small><\/p><\/div>\n<li>Push notifications are sent using an Oracle Mobile Hub Notifications API.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;In terms of the technical solution itself, it\u2019s a cloud-native mobile application that was developed in a few weeks. The solution is completely based on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. It\u2019s an API-first platform that\u2019s based on microservices and invoked through OCI API Gateway. It\u2019s also protected by a web application firewall.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>\u2014Akshai Parthasarathy, Oracle<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The mobile app is integrated with TicketOne, an online ticket sales application. The mobile app supplements other safety initiatives implemented by the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, allowing it to safely reopen amid the pandemic. &#8220;Oracle Cloud Infrastructure [was] instrumental in reopening our doors to tourists,&#8221; explained <a href=\"https:\/\/romemuseumexhibition.com\/speakers\/alberto-bruni\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Alberto Bruni<\/a>, COO at Archaeological Park of Pompeii. &#8220;With [the] technology, we are well-equipped to enhance and preserve tourism within the local area.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Reopening the Pompeii site to tourists after lockdown was tough.
