But all of this is already in place and happening\u2026As for the perspective, though, there\u2019s still room to expand, according to Neil.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_55256\" style=\"width: 140px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/neil-raden.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55256\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/neil-raden-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"130\" height=\"130\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-55256\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-55256\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><small>Neil Raden<\/small><\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI believe there is a huge opportunity for the BI vendors to expand the reach and value of their software, but not through visualization interfaces and more powerful analyst tools. That train left the station. It\u2019s time for BI to take its place on the porch with the big dogs and tackle the real operational processes of organizations. Classic BI is not going away, it provides a valuable function, but not everyone needs it.\u201d \u2014Neil Raden<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sounds reasonable, the industry should evolve. At the same time, let&#8217;s have a look at the original report.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_market_is_still_growing\"><\/span>The market is still growing!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Regardless of traditional understanding of BI becoming outdated, the spendings on BI keep rising.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Spending on business intelligence software, designed to help executives make better decisions, is seen rising 11% to $5.8 billion this year despite a U.S. economic slowdown, research firm Gartner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/marketsNews\/idUSL013768320080401\" onclick=\"javascript:urchinTracker('\/outbound\/www.reuters.com\/article\/marketsNews\/idUSL013768320080401?ref=\/page\/29');\">said<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Gartner says BI hold too high of a position with CIOs and will not be affected by the economic downturn as much as other technologies.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The research firm said business intelligence had beaten all other technologies in a survey it had carried out of priorities of 1,500 chief information officers worldwide. Gartner said it expected business intelligence software sales in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and the Asia-Pacific region to outgrow those in North America this year, as they did last year. By 2012, the global business intelligence market should be worth $7.7 billion, Gartner said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>BI taking over the world, huh? That\u2019s encouraging news for BI companies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_wrong_with_business_intelligence\"><\/span>What&#8217;s wrong with business intelligence?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>So, what else can be improved with traditional BI? Gartner\u2019s recent statement about companies misinterpreting the concept of business intelligence is all over the news. No wonder, companies need to be confronted with this common fallacy of thinking that BI is just about technology.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/phil-britt-97b11b2\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Phillip Britt<\/a> from DestinationCRM in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.destinationcrm.com\/Articles\/CRM-News\/Daily-News\/The-9-Fatal-Flaws-of-Business-Intelligence-51718.aspx\" target=_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recent article<\/a> chews out Gartners point and suggests nine ways (corresponding to Gartner\u2019s nine \u201cfatal flaws\u201d) to consider in adjusting your approach to business intelligence.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_55278\" style=\"width: 140px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/phil-britt.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55278\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/phil-britt-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"130\" height=\"130\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-55278\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-55278\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><small>Philipp Britt<\/small><\/p><\/div>\n<p>The first thing to realize here is that developing a <em>\u201cBI initiative from a data-centric perspective<\/em> won\u2019t work unless <em>there is involvement from the business side from the beginning<\/em>.\u201d He goes on criticizing the spreadsheet culture and the way companies underestimate the importance of sharing data across enterprise.<\/p>\n<p>Then, oh, my favorite one: data quality.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cData quality issues are almost ubiquitous and the impact on BI is significant\u2014people won\u2019t use BI applications that are founded on irrelevant, incomplete, or questionable data.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Amen!<\/p>\n<p>The other fundamental problems with the way companies approach BI include \u201cone-stop shopping\u201d approach, \u201cstability\u201d (BI goals should be reevaluated and the action plan should be adjusted accordingly from year to year, actually), outsourcing BI (cost-cutting is not the primary goal of your BI practice), lack of collaboration across enterprise (no agreement on a \u201csingle truth\u201d to aim for across different departments), etc.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_55280\" style=\"width: 140px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/bill-hostmann.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55280\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/bill-hostmann-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"130\" height=\"130\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-55280\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-55280\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><small>Bill Hostmann<\/small><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Finally, the biggest flaw is the <em>\u201clack of a documented BI strategy<\/em>.\u201d This one actually holds true for each and every part of the overall enterprise strategy, it holds true for data integraion, data quality, data migration, ETL, literally EVERYTHING in the related field.<\/p>\n<p>Gartner\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/bill-hostmann-4a4b383\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Hostmann<\/a> even <em>\u201crecommends creating a team tasked with writing or revising a BI strategy document, with members drawn from both the technology and the business sides.\u201d<\/em> Well said.<\/p>\n<p>Do you have your own ideas about what can be improved in a BI approach?
