Doesn\u2019t compare to a $16 billion commercial database market, of course, but considering the absence of licensing costs, it\u2019s still quite an number.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cMore enterprises are deploying open-source databases than ever before,\u201d the report states. \u201cEnterprises are mainly looking to open-source databases to support new applications such as Web 2.0, web-based applications, small portal applications, radio frequency identification (RFID), and other new workloads.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The report suggests that \u201cevery enterprise should now consider open-source databases as part of its overall DBMS strategy, as doing this will deliver cost savings, especially when supporting small to midsized applications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/forrester-open-source-database-report-2008.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/forrester-open-source-database-report-2008-1024x618.png\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-59621\" \/><\/a><small>Oracle and SQL Server are the mostly deployed databases today (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cvc.uab.es\/~bagdanov\/database\/lectures\/lecture-01.pdf\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Image credit<\/a>)<\/small><\/center><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Suitable_for_major_enterprise_needs\"><\/span>Suitable for major enterprise needs<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Following up on the report, Forrester experts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerweekly.com\/news\/2240022212\/Open-source-databases-should-be-in-your-strategy\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">estimate<\/a> open-source databases to be quite capable of supporting 80% of business applications market. The factors backing up this estimation include:<\/p>\n<p>1) <b>Price<\/b>. Obviously, open source is more cost-effective that commercial. Forrester estimates cost savings ranging from 20% to 55%.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIT costs themselves have gone up quite significantly over the years, and database management costs have also grown over the years,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/noelyuhanna\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Noel Yuhanna<\/a>, a Forrester analyst and the report\u2019s author. \u201c[Companies] are looking to contain these costs, and they\u2019re looking for alternative database options, including open source.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>2) <b>Flexibility<\/b> in use and deployment, which again substracts from the general cost.<\/p>\n<p>3) The large number of independent software vendors and partners providing a <b>24\/7 support<\/b>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_59636\" style=\"width: 165px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/Noel-Yuhanna.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59636\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/Noel-Yuhanna.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"155\" height=\"150\" class=\"size-full wp-image-59636\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-59636\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><small>Noel Yuhanna<\/small><\/p><\/div>\n<p>That doesn\u2019t mean, however, that companies currently using proprietary databases should switch to open source immediately. The migration process can get complicated, so much thought should be given to a decision like that.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cMigrations are complex, and no one actually has a solution where you can do a 100% migration from an Oracle database or DB2 to an open-source database so easily,\u201d Yuhanna said. \u201cIt takes a lot of effort, and basically no one wants to spend a million dollars to save a million dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Migration_from_legacy_systems_including_mainframes\"><\/span>Migration from legacy systems, including mainframes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>At the same time, we at Apatar are working each day to make such migrations as easy as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, and DB2 remain the mostly deployed databases today. For instance, according to <a href=\"ftp:\/\/public.dhe.ibm.com\/software\/emea\/de\/info\/Gartner-2006-03-DBMS-Spending-and-Deployment-Trends.pdf\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Gartner<\/a>, IBM DB2 was deployed within 34 percent of enterprise applications worldwide in 2006 and has recently experienced the highest growth compared to other major databases. In 2007, DB2 was positioned in the Leaders section of the Gartner&#8217;s Magic Quadrant for Data Warehouse DBMS.<\/p>\n<p>Helping enterprises to fulfill their migration needs, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/what-is-apatar-open-source-data-integration\/\">Apatar Data Integration<\/a> supports all of the four databases and provides a drag-and-drop interface for DBAs and even nontechnical users.
