Having 32,300+ employees, it sold 256,255 cars in 2018 alone, generating $25.8 billion in revenue. Today, the company is investing heavily into emerging technologies, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/tag\/blockchain\/\">blockchain<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/tag\/machine-learning\/\">artificial intelligence<\/a> (AI), looking for new solutions that can improve customer experience for car owners and can secure data processing.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, we covered how blockchain can be applied to the automotive industry across <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/automotive-blockchain-from-manufacturing-to-security-to-insurance\/\">various scenarios<\/a>\u2014from manufacturing to security to insurance.<\/p>\n<p>As Porsche works with huge volumes of vehicle data, there is a pressing need for the company to have efficient solutions for securing and storing it. Bearing this idea in mind, Porsche is experimenting with blockchain, as well, to ensure such an approach.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Vehicle_history_on_a_blockchain\"><\/span>Vehicle history on a blockchain<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Today, the strategic <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.porsche.com\/en\/company\/porsche-ventures-venture-capital-startups-start-ups-investments-150-million-artificial-intelligence-blockchain-virtual-augmented-reality-gapless-wayray-anagog-miles-home-ix-rimac-16148.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">investment portfolio<\/a> of Porsche includes <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.porsche.com\/en\/2019\/digital\/porsche-global-innovation-award-startup-autobahn-expo-day-17031.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">over 50<\/a> startups. One of them is <a href=\"https:\/\/info.gapless.app\/en\/home\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Gapless<\/a>, a German company that builds blockchain-based solutions for secure encryption of data records. The startup was founded in September 2018 and is actively growing.<\/p>\n<p>Gapless offers drivers an opportunity to digitally manage all the information about all their cars, including those previously owned. This may include the entire history of vehicles with photos and attached documents for each of their cars. Another useful feature is managing <i>appointments<\/i> (e.g., with a garage service), getting <i>notifications<\/i> about these, and storing the history of <i>visits<\/i> on a personal timeline.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/the-gapless-app-porsche-using-blockchain.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/the-gapless-app-porsche-using-blockchain.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-44729\" \/><\/a><small>The Gapless app (<a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=app.gapless&#038;hl=en_US\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Image credit<\/a>)<\/small><\/center><\/p>\n<p>The data is recorded on a blockchain and, therefore, can be automatically verified and trusted by third parties\u2014due to the technology\u2019s immutability.<\/p>\n<p>Gapless is also building an ecosystem of third-party vendors around the product, which opens the doors for its use by car dealers, body shops, insurance companies, etc.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Blockchain-based_parking_payments\"><\/span>Blockchain-based parking payments<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In January 2019, Porsche <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.porsche.com\/en\/company\/porsche-blockchain-technology-opportunities-digitization-16800.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">introduced<\/a> a blockchain-based prototype for parking payments. The idea of the solution is based on the lack of a single trusted party during the payment process.<\/p>\n<p>The work on the project has been carried out by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/tiziana-vicino-88a013127\/?originalSubdomain=de\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Tiziana Vicino<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/in.linkedin.com\/pub\/matthias-hub\/2a\/612\/795\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Matthias Hub<\/a> of Porsche\u2019s development team together with Quantoz, a Dutch blockchain specialist, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/matthiasfalkenberg\/?originalSubdomain=de\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Matthias Falkenberg<\/a>, a Munich Area\u2013based consultant. The main goal of the prototype was to make the process of paying a parking fee easier and faster for drivers, ensuring the adoption of a cashless economy across the automotive industry.<\/p>\n<p>The solution was built using the Quasar platform, a blockchain ledger from Quantoz with a compliance layer on top of it. The validation of each transaction there is conducted in accordance with a set of rules to be specified with the Quasar Business Intelligence Center (QuBIC). Owing to QuBIC, users can come up with their own types of wallets (connected to a bank or a service provider or freely created) and add their rules for sending \/ receiving  payments, as well as creating child accounts.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/different-types-of-wallets-defined-in-QuBIC-suply-chain.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/different-types-of-wallets-defined-in-QuBIC-suply-chain-1024x560.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-44727\" \/><\/a><small>Different types of wallets defined in QuBIC (<a href=\"https:\/\/quantoz.com\/2017\/03\/27\/digital-watermarks-quasar-ledger\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Image credit<\/a>)<\/small><\/center><\/p>\n<p>For drivers, the process is triggered via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/iot-for-airlines-smart-baggage-tracking-with-rfid-tags-and-cloud-foundry\/\">RFID cards<\/a> identified at the entrance gateways when coming to the parking lot and leaving it. After that, the data is sent to the car park terminal.<\/p>\n<p>The fee is calculated automatically and then paid via a virtual blockchain wallet designated by a user. In such a system, Porsche acts as an intermediary that collects the money from customers and transfers them to the parking authority on behalf of drivers. Here, blockchain ensures the privacy of the transferred data.\n<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe decided on the Stellar blockchain protocol, which can handle 1,000 transactions per second. This was more than enough to bill for parking tickets in the context of our evaluation of the blockchain technology.\u201d \u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/matthiasfalkenberg\/?originalSubdomain=de\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Matthias Falkenberg<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The proof of concept has been implemented within two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Secure_car_access_and_data_sharing\"><\/span>Secure car access and data sharing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Within its innovation strategy for 2025, Porsche launched a series of hackathons aimed at finding promising startups and projects.<\/p>\n<p>At one of these events in mid-2017, the company spotted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.porsche.com\/usa\/aboutporsche\/pressreleases\/pag\/?lang=none&#038;pool=international-de&#038;id=479342\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">XAIN<\/a>, a mobility platform\/protocol that can store sensor data on a blockchain network and enable secure interaction between mobile devices and machines.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, Porsche announced a successful implementation of their pilot research project with XAIN, which was carried out within 3 months. It was revealed that the blockchain implementation had been tested within Porsche Panamera using XAIN\u2019s \u201ceXpandable AI network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/326898618_Proof_of_Kernel_Work_A_democratic_low-energy_consensus_for_distributed_access-control_protocols\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">architecture<\/a> of the pilot project includes three main types of smart contracts that store different types of data:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>an overview of all registered drivers<\/li>\n<li>hash values of the driving history<\/li>\n<li>a state of a vehicle (car assignments) and access rights\u2014e.g., when opening the doors or starting the engine<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The blockchain network is implemented on AWS, copmbining three categories of nodes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\"><b>IPFS nodes<\/b> (store encrypted vehicle data transmitted from the board computer)<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\"><b>Dataloggers<\/b> (store the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Merkle_tree\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Merkle tree<\/a> of a blockchain to ensure the security of the network)<\/li>\n<li><b>Processors<\/b> (hybrid nodes that mine new transactions and store recent ones)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(Here, mining is the process of adding transactions to the existing blockchain ledger distributed among all the users of a blockchain.)<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/porsche-using-blockchain-XAIN-architecture.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/porsche-using-blockchain-XAIN-architecture.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-44702\" \/><\/a><small>The architecture of the XAIN-Porsche system (<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/next-level-german-engineering\/the-porsche-xain-vehicle-blockchain-network-a-technical-overview-e1f48c40e73d\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Image credit<\/a>)<\/small><\/center><\/p>\n<p>The XAIN protocol is integrated with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), while the <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/protofire-blog\/solhint-an-advanced-linter-for-ethereums-solidity-c6b155aced7b\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Solidity<\/a> language is used for smart contracts. For the interaction between the clients of the network, Ethereum\u2019s \u00d0\u039eVp2p Wire Protocol is employed, which allows them not to store the entire blockchain, but still participate in the network operations.<\/p>\n<p>The interaction with a vehicle is organized via a smartphone app, which, as well as a vehicle, contains an HD wallet with encrypted private keys. The app also features a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) module for connecting with the car, and a Web3 module that ensures interaction with XAIN\u2019s Processors or Dataloggers, as well as enables the transmission of signed transactions.<\/p>\n<p>There are private keys of two types for both vehicles and users. While Type1 is applied to encrypted communication via BLE, Type2 is used for signing transactions and messages.<\/p>\n<p>All the processes performed by the network are possible thanks to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.semanticscholar.org\/paper\/Yellow-Paper%3A-Version-1.2-Practical-Proof-of-Kernel-Lundb\u00e6k-Beutel\/2f1ecdb469f85404e141917210b2bcb6c243805a?p2df\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Practical Proof of Kernel Work<\/a> (PPoKW)\u2014an energy-optimized consensus algorithm, working in electronic control units (ECU) of the cars.<\/p>\n<p>At Hyperledger Global Summit 2018 and the Distributed Intelligent Systems for Mobility conference, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/nick-de-la-forge\/fr?originalSubdomain=de\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Nick de la Forge<\/a> of XAIN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hraqokXlzVc\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">shared<\/a> the details of the implementation.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cProof of Kernel Work is a slimmed-down version of Proof of Work. It is basically selecting a small committee before the mining. This committee is doing the actual work, and you don\u2019t need the entire network to participate, but only a small portion of the network, while keeping the same aspects of security.\u201d \u2014Nick de la Forge, XAIN<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/porsche-using-blockchain-Nick-De-La-Forge-XAIN.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/porsche-using-blockchain-Nick-De-La-Forge-XAIN-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-44705\" \/><\/a><small>Nick De La Forge, Hyperledger Global Summit 2018 (Image credit: Altoros)<\/small><\/center><\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/next-level-german-engineering\/the-porsche-xain-vehicle-blockchain-network-a-technical-overview-e1f48c40e73d\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">suggested<\/a> by XAIN, the solution developed together with Porche can be applied across a range of scenarios:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">fast and secure car locking\/unlocking (key access in 1.5 seconds\u2014compared to 10\u201330 seconds faced in <a href=\"https:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2019\/01\/14\/sharering-launches-blockchain-powered-car-sharing-on-top-of-existing-rental-services\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">similar<\/a> blockchain implementations)<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">granting temporary access to other people without a necessity to be near the car (such as delivery of pizza or mail)<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">notifications about other people\u2019s attempts to access the car<\/li>\n<li>simpler and safer payment procedures (as with blockchain parking described earlier)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the upcoming years, Porsche <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/next-level-german-engineering\/the-porsche-xain-vehicle-blockchain-network-a-technical-overview-e1f48c40e73d\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">is planning<\/a> to test a serialized production of blockchain-powered vehicles and to find new areas where blockchain could bring improvements.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Where_else\"><\/span>Where else?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/de.linkedin.com\/in\/claudioweck\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Claudio Weck<\/a> of Porsche, blockchain could be applied to managing not only payments and vehicle history data, but many other types of information. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hraqokXlzVc\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">pointed out<\/a> that possible use cases may include tracking CO2 emission levels and supply chain details, such as provenance of car parts or vehicles themselves.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSupply chain is a very interesting thing for us, too, where we track all parts from an origin to the end product. Today, many companies are doing their best to introduce autonomous driving at a wide scale. While the concept is based on AI, there is a high demand for reliable data that self-driving algorithms can use. And, namely, blockchain can be implemented for storing and securely transferring this information.<\/p>\n<p>Being part of the Volkswagen Group, Porsche engineers are also among 300 experts across all the alliance\u2019s brands who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.volkswagenag.com\/en\/news\/stories\/2018\/08\/putting-blockchains-on-the-road.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">exchange ideas<\/a> on how blockchain can improve the automotive industry. For instance, one of the possible scenarios under investigation is <em>protecting odometer data<\/em>, which is sensitive to fraud.<\/p>\n<p>The challenge right now is to put all these ideas into life, improving drivers\u2019 experience on the roads.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Want_details_Watch_the_video\"><\/span>Want details?
