SAP Open-Sources a Cloud Foundry Service Broker for Their HANA DB<\/b><\/p>\n<p>SAP <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.cloudfoundry.com\/2013\/12\/11\/sap-hana-service-broker-contributed-to-the-cloud-foundry-incubator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">contributed<\/a> their HANA service broker to the Cloud Foundry PaaS incubator. Swisscom has already deployed this new broker to their infrastructure\u2014along with SAP HANA DB and Cloud Foundry. Other large vendors also demonstrate their interest in Cloud Foundry: \u00a0NTT <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.by\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;ved=0CCQQFjAA&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2Fi_yudai%2Fstatus%2F415356328458981377&amp;ei=dU3VUs2pJ4eThgf4oYGYAw&amp;usg=AFQjCNEdKN30ammH5e1ipL_NgSwY3Q7pkg&amp;sig2=IFFNjOgsWSQHqRYbmvAHjg&amp;bvm=bv.59378465,d.ZG4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">officially signed<\/a> the community contributor license agreement on Dec 23.<\/p>\n<p><b>2. Hangops Panel: Cloud Foundry, Stackato, Appcera, GitHub, Mozilla, and OpenShift<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openshift.com\/blogs\/what-industry-leaders-can-teach-us-about-platform-as-a-service?utm_content=bufferae994&amp;utm_source=buffer&amp;utm_medium=twitter&amp;utm_campaign=Buffer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hangops panel<\/a> featuring Platform-as-a-Service industry leaders, such as Cloud Foundry, Stackato, Appcera, GitHub, Mozilla, and OpenShift, was held on Dec 6. Instead of competitor wars, the friendly discussion focused on the notion of PaaS, the state of the ecosystem, and the benefits PaaS provides for system administrators and developers.<\/p>\n<p><b>3. Dell\u2019s Customers Will Access CenturyLink\u2019s Public Cloud Services<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dell.com\/learn\/us\/en\/uscorp1\/secure\/2013-12-12-dell-cloud-partner-program-centurylink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">partnership<\/a>, Dell customers will get access to CenturyLink\u2019s public cloud services (compute, storage, and networking) via a web services API and in the unified management interface. Automation and orchestration features, as well as a PaaS based on Cloud Foundry and Iron Foundry, will also be available.<\/p>\n<p><b>4. ActiveState Releases Stackato v3.0.1<\/b><\/p>\n<p>ActiveState <a href=\"https:\/\/www.activestate.com\/blog\/activestate-stackato-v30-now-available\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">released<\/a> the third version of their private enterprise PaaS based on the updated Cloud Foundry v2. It features Docker containers, native APIs for OpenStack auto-scaling, updated runtimes and services (including PHP 5.5, Ruby 2.0, and RabbitMQ 3.1\/2.8), etc.<\/p>\n<p><b>5. Red Hat Releases OpenShift Enterprise 2 and OpenShift Origin 3, Updates OpenShift Online<\/b><\/p>\n<p>This December was marked by several releases from Red Hat:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.networkworld.com\/news\/2013\/120213-red-hat-openshift-276503.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OpenShift Enterprise 2<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.redhat.com\/blog\/announcing-openshift-origin-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OpenShift Origin 3<\/a>, and a new version of <a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.redhat.com\/blog\/online-release-for-december-2013\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OpenShift Online<\/a>. Baidu to Use Docker Containers for Their Own PaaS<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Baidu, a popular Chinese search engine, has <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.docker.io\/2013\/12\/baidu-using-docker-for-its-paas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a> that it will use Docker containers for the upcoming Baidu App Engine 2.0. With this addition, the provider plans to move away from a sandbox-based PaaS to a container-based one.<\/p>\n<p><b>7. Microsoft Aims to Boost Azure Use with Cloud OS Network of Partners<\/b><\/p>\n<p>25 cloud service providers joined Microsoft\u2019s recently introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cloud OS Network<\/a> to deliver hosted services built on the Microsoft Cloud Platform. Members of the network will standardize on Windows Server with Hyper-V, System Center, and the Windows Azure Pack. In December, Microsoft also <a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/blogs.msdn.com\/12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a> Read-Access Geo Redundant Storage for Windows Azue, which will access a remote secondary replica in case the primary storage becomes unavailable.<\/p>\n<p><b>8. CloudBees Now Supports Java EE 7<\/b><\/p>\n<p>CloudBees <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudbees.com\/press-room\/cloudbees-adds-wildfly-support-java-ee-7-rolled-out-wildfly-8.cb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a> support for WildFly 8, the latest version of the JBoss open-source application server, giving developers access to Java EE 7, the latest Java distribution.<\/p>\n<p><b>9. Engine Yard\u2019s Early Access: Java EE 7, Postgre 9.3, and Percona 5.6<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Engine Yard invites to try their new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineyard.com\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Java EE 7 stack<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/support.cloud.engineyard.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/205409738-Use-PostgreSQL-9-3-on-Engine-Yard-obsolete-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PostgreSQL 9.3<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/support.cloud.engineyard.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/205409728-Use-MySQL-Percona-Server-5-6-on-Engine-Yard-obsolete-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Percona MySQL 5.6<\/a> in early access. The platform now also supports Amazon\u2019s C3 instances for CPU-bound apps and AWS dedicated instances for HIPAA-compliant environments.<\/p>\n<p><b>10. An Improved Node.js Buildpack from Heroku<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Heroku <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.heroku.com\/new-node-buildpack\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">updated<\/a> their Node.js buildpack. Using build cache, it provides faster deployments, supports more versions of Node.js, allows for custom registry support, etc.<\/p>\n<p><b>11. New PaaS Platforms: PLDT Cloud PaaS and SlapRunner <\/b><\/p>\n<p>During December, two new PaaS systems appeared. PLDT Alpha Enterprise unveiled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manilatimes.net\/2013\/12\/26\/business\/pldt-alpha-enterprise-unveils-cloud-paas\/63271\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PLDT Cloud PaaS<\/a>, while France-based ViFiB launched <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vifib.com\/press\/news-ViFiB.SlapRunner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SlapRunner<\/a> powered by SlapOS.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nMore to come: On Jan 7, 2014, Gartner released Magic Quadrant for Enterprise PaaS; CenturyLink to Use BOSH for Public Clouds; the PaaS market to grow to $6.94 billion
