The first keynote by James Watters and Joshua McKenty of Pivotal dispelled these assumptions.<\/p>\n<p>One of the main points was that a PaaS, such as CF, changes the way organizations are operating. If you have cloud-native apps on a PaaS, you are probably getting them to production almost immediately. Guys like Uber and Netflix were early adopters out of necessity.<\/p>\n<p>In James\u2019s view, \u201cGoogle and Netflix are not different, they&#8217;re the future.\u201d It seems that Joshua couldn\u2019t agree more as he developed the idea further: \u201cThe equivalent to going to college today is working at Google.\u201d These companies set an example to government agencies that go agile and it still takes them nine months to deploy new apps.<\/p>\n<p>According to Joshua, &#8220;native cloud is the means of binding.&#8221; Still, he says that most people only equal cloud-native to 12-factor, while you can actually go beyond this.<\/p>\n<p>Afterwards, James spoke about WebSphere and WebLogic and how they should move to Spring. He also revealed that Spring Boot passed 1 million downloads by April.<\/p>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/cf-summit-james-watters-joshua-mckenty-welcome-to-the-cloud-native-enterprise.jpg\" alt=\"CF Summit: Welcome to the cloud-native enterprise with James Watters and Joshua McKenty\" width=\"642\" height=\"446\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-43470\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In general, this talk was penetrated with the idea of changing the world. Thus, James and Joshua outlined a future where developers and DevOps unite to create distributed solutions with multiple devices to bring along the changes for the better.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Huawei: Communication as a Service with Cloud Foundry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The opening talks were continued by Huawei, a long-time telecom company that bet its future on PaaS, SDN, and NFV. Dr. Ying Xiong, Chief Architect for Base Platform Service, spoke about how Huawei is using Cloud Foundry and APIs for rapid app development in their \u201cmushroom cloud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The talk uncovered some details about the company\u2019s internal Cloud Foundry deployment, which is currently running 4,800+ applications and has 3,500+ registered users.<\/p>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/cf-summit-huawei-communication-as-a-service-with-cloud-foundry.jpg\" alt=\"CF Summit: Communication as a service with Cloud Foundry\" width=\"642\" height=\"456\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-43471\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Dr. Ying Xiong also shared what challenges they had to overcome. For instance, dealing with an open API, working with a large cluster in a public cloud, etc. In addition, he gave a couple of examples of app apps they are running on a PaaS.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>VMware: Enabling the developer to be a first-class user of a data center<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kit Colbert of VMware presented a keynote on security and making data centers more developer-friendly. According to him, <em>&#8220;the biggest threat to security is internal employees.&#8221;<\/em> On the other hand, <em>&#8220;most people&#8217;s iPhone is more secure than most data centers,&#8221;<\/em> said Kit.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Humana: Consumerizing healthcare through Lean and Agile digital product dev<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Health insurance giant Humana wrapped up the morning keynotes. Jason McKee and Antonio Melo described how the company had to change their old ways and reinvent themselves\u2014faced by fierce competition. Today, <em>&#8220;Healthcare is on fire!&#8221;<\/em> noted Jason McKee.<\/p>\n<p>They shared a story of using Cloud Foundry for developing and deploying an app for everyone in as little as five weeks. Humana\u2019s platform is based on Pivotal tools: Pivotal Tracker is used for project management and Dashing.io powers the dashboard.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>EMC: Not all clouds are created equal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Brian Gallagher of EMC began by explaining why it is important to use the right type of cloud for running your apps. In his opinion, this cloud diversity is one of the reasons CF appeared. So, <em>\u201cmake sure you <code style=\"color: #222222; background-color: #e6e6e6;\">$ cf push my-app<\/code><\/em> to a good cloud!\u201d suggested Brian.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Lockheed Martin: Managing cultural transformation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Then, Lockheed Martin\u2019s team discussed the details of their journey to the DevOps culture. The aerospace, defense, and security company used Cloud Foundry to improve efficiency and process big data. <em>&#8220;We had to transform our IT, processes, and people.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>They are using the Pivotal CF distribution. At first, the capabilities promised by Cloud Foundry sounded too good to be true, but it totally managed to deliver on all of them. According to the team members\u2014Kevin Carlson, Christine Chesnik, and Cecil Miller\u2014the key to success with a PaaS is bringing together the four Ps: people, process, platform, and prediction.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>GE: Cloud Foundry for the Internet of (really important) Things<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>GE, which announced the launch of its own Industrial CF Dojo on Monday, spoke of using Cloud Foundry for IoT applications. <em>&#8220;Maybe you think this is like cropdusters coming to an organic growers conf. Let me convince you otherwise,&#8221;<\/em> started his talk Harel Kodesh, GE\u2019s VP\/CTO.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, a single flight generates 500 GB worth of data. So, if you have 100,000 flights a day, there are a whopping 50 petabytes to store and process every 24 hours. The keynote described how GE handles all this data using a PaaS. We all were impressed with how GE runs the <code style=\"color: #222222; background-color: #e6e6e6;\">cf push wind-turbine<\/code> command.<\/p>\n<p>Another point made by GE Software is securing the Industrial Internet. Atul Kshirsagar, Sr. Engineer at GE, outlined the company\u2019s vision on the topic, involving the use of DDS at the top layer of a securitization strategy. Watch <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudfoundry.org\/events\/sites\/cfs2015\/files\/pages\/files\/cfsummit15_kshirsagar.pdf\">his slides<\/a> for more.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Cory Doctorow: Why the opposite of \u201cfree\u201d is \u201cslave\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The final keynote of the summit\u2014funny, as well\u2014was presented by Cory Doctorow, an author, a blogger, and a journalist.<\/p>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/cf-summit-cory-doctorow.jpg\" alt=\"CF Summit: Cory Doctorow\" width=\"658\" height=\"385\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-43472\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><small>&#8220;The plane I&#8217;m taking to London is a flying Solaris workstation.&#8221; \u2014Cory Doctorow<\/small><\/em><\/p>\n<p><\/center><\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sessions\"><\/span>Sessions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>IBM + Pivotal: BOSH bootstrapping<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During this session, Michael Maximilien of IBM and Maria Shaldibina of Pivotal talked about external CPIs for BOSH, which are now distributed as releases. Highlights:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There is no need to fork BOSH any more (well, almost).<\/li>\n<li>CPIs are now separately versioned and maintained.<\/li>\n<li>This allows for better team separation and growth.<\/li>\n<li>It also allows to use non-Ruby programming languages.<\/li>\n<li>External CPI got better at including CPI dependencies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Lessons learned from Corelogic&#8217;s year of Agile development with CF<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In this session, Richard Leurig provided a glimpse into how Agile development works with Cloud Foundry at CoreLogic. The main positive aspects he named were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>easy deployment and scaling of apps<\/li>\n<li>configurability and support for many frameworks, including your own<\/li>\n<li>simple upgrades<\/li>\n<li>integration with Splunk and AppDynamics<\/li>\n<li>easy to lookup app logs: <em>\u201cas simple as <code style=\"color: #222222; background-color: #e6e6e6;\">cf logs myapp<\/code>\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li>great support from the Pivotal CF team<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">On the downside, he mentioned some things that could be improved:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Resiliency and recoverabilit.<\/li>\n<li>The health dashboard.<\/li>\n<li>It would be great to have tools to support operational efficiency.<\/li>\n<li>Backups are still manual and need to be done frequently.<\/li>\n<li>Role-based controls could be finer grain.<\/li>\n<li>There is a possibility of credentials stored in environment variables showing up in third-party tools and integrations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>EMC: CF and the 12-factor app 101<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Raghavan Srinivas and Matt Cowger of EMC presented their session for operations engineers, \u201cThe Secret Decoder Ring for Operations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/cf-summit-raghavan-srinivas-matt-cowger-cloud-foundry-and-12-factor-app.jpg\" alt=\"CF Summit: Cloud Foundry and 12-factor app 101 with Raghavan Srinivas and Matt Cowger\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-43473\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The goal was to cover the main concepts and principles of the 12-factor methodology to help Ops better understand the Devs community.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>LDS Church: Norouter\u2014running Cloud Foundry without the Gorouter<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mike Heath of the LDS Church introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/cloudfoundry-community\/norouter-core\">Norouter<\/a>, an open-source alternative to the Cloud Foundry\u2019s Gorouter. The thing is that the Gorouter with its two layers of load balancing imposes a number of issues. The Norouter solution, in its turn, is supposed to integrate directly with existing load balancers, eliminating the need to forward traffic through the Gorouter.<\/p>\n<p>It is a BOSH deployable agent that collects route data in the same way as the Gorouter does and dynamically updates LTM. At the moment, Norouter is in the beta quality.<\/p>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/cf-summit-norouter-mike-heath.jpg\" alt=\"CF Summit: Mike Heath about the Norouter solution\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-43474\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Mike demonstrated how the LDS Church implemented this solution within their organization&#8217;s F5 Local Traffic Managers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>The start of Kroger&#8217;s journey to Cloud Foundry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Kroger, the second largest retailer in the United States, presented their story of how they started using Cloud Foundry. According to the speakers, James Masters and Ted Tollefson, the main goals with CF were to consolidate platforms, achieve elastic scaling and automation, as well as improve quality. They used a combination of code, tools, and environments to automate project provisioning. Liked this quotation: <em>\u201cIt&#8217;s not about day 1 deployment, it&#8217;s about day 2 ongoing management.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Matt Stine: Deploying Microservices to Cloud Foundry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Matt Stine of Pivotal delivered another great talk on microservices and how they work with Cloud Foundry. This was probably one of the most anticipated sessions, so the room was full to its capacity. Some people were even sitting right on the floor!<\/p>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/cf-summit-matt-stine-microservices-with-cloud-foundry.jpg\" alt=\"CF Summit: Deploying microservices with Cloud Foundry (Matt Stine)\" width=\"646\" height=\"485\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-43475\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em><small>&#8220;BOSH all the things!&#8221; \u2014Matt Stine (Pivotal)<\/small><\/em><\/p>\n<p><\/center><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">According to Matt, many assume that the word \u201cmicro\u201d means small and that is the case. In reality, it is not quite the point. Matt insists that you cannot really measure something as complex as microservices. To understand them, you should think of SOA and loose coupling. Furthermore, Matt emphasized that one should become an expert at monoliths before learning how to manage microservices.<\/p>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/cf-summit-matt-stine-deploying-microservice-architectures-with-cloud-foundry.jpg\" alt=\"CF Summit: Deploying microservice architectures with Cloud Foundry by Matt Stine\" width=\"646\" height=\"485\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-43476\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><small><em>&#8220;No microservice is an island.&#8221; \u2014Matt Stine (Pivotal)<\/em><\/small><\/p>\n<p><\/center><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Matt also covered some challenges of distributed systems to meet:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">configuration management<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">service registration and discovery<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">routing and load balancing<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">fault tolerance<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">monitoring<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">For those who couldn\u2019t attend, Matt shared a one-hour version of his 30-min talk on microservices at the SV CF meetup the next day.<\/p>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/cf-summit-matt-stine-microservices.png\" alt=\"CF Summit: Matt Stine about deploying microservices with Cloud Foundry\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-43477\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">He already shared <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/mstine\/deploying-microservices-to-cloud-foundry\">his preso<\/a> online.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>CenturyLink: Making the leap by transitioning enterprises to a PaaS mindset<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Richard Seroter of CenturyLink spoke about the challenges that transitioning to a PaaS entails and how to ease this process. His main point is that the change is extremely difficult. To become successful with Cloud Foundry, you have to make cultural transformation within your organization. <em>\u201cPaaS is a change in mindset for the enterprise,\u201d<\/em> said Richard.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Therefore, he provided some tips for CF adopters:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Creating reference architectures is always a good idea.<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">To become productive, the company needs to focus on the problem.<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Testing disaster recovery is also very useful.<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">If you haven\u2019t moved your data to the apps, you haven\u2019t really adopted CF.<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Try smaller things in a public cloud and see if it&#8217;s a right fit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/cf-summit-richard-seroter-session.jpg\" alt=\"Cf Summit: Why use Cloud Foundry (Richard Seroter)\" width=\"646\" height=\"485\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-43478\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em><small>\u201cI\u2019ve patched and updated pieces of the app and now it\u2019s a snowflake I can\u2019t destroy.&#8221; \u2014Richard Seroter<\/small><\/em><\/p>\n<p><\/center><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>IBM: Migrating the Bluemix UI to a microservices architecture on CF<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This session by Tony Erwin and Brian Martin described how IBM, which is currently working to get context path routing and app versioning into Cloud Foundry, had migrated the Bluemix UI to a microservices architecture.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Bluemix customer UI used to be itself a monolith app running on CF. Its goal was to provide a desktop-like experience in a browser. By turning it into a microservices-based app, IBM managed to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">aid migration to a lighter, modern technology stack<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">improve speed by using smaller services<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">make life easier for developers<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">make it possible to do regular updates to the UI<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">improve SEO<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">improve cross-team UI consistency<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Future iterations: <em>\u201cdriven by 12 factors!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Concourse: CI that scales with your project<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">While not working on Cloud Foundry yet, Alex Suraci built the Concourse project to address the needs of developers who were creating CF. The concept of simplicity is the essence of the project: simple ideas and tools. So, that\u2019s what Concourse offers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">expressing entire pipelines<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">integrating with arbitrary resources<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">executing one-off builds (either locally or in another CI system)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/cf-summit-alex-suraci.jpg\" alt=\"CF Summit: CI that scales with your project (Concourse) by Alex Suraci\" width=\"646\" height=\"485\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-43479\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><small><em>\u201cRead the release notes if you want to live.\u201d \u2014Alex Suraci (Pivotal)<\/em><\/small><\/p>\n<p><\/center><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Concourse CI system is deployed and configured with BOSH and leverages Garden for containerization across platforms. Alex Heneveld and Robert Moss of CloudSoft explained why one should care about Apache Brooklyn and how it is bridged with Cloud Foundry: <em>\u201cIt expands your world without compromising it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In short, by using Apache Brooklyn with Cloud Foundry, engineers can:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">access the 40+ services in its catalog<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">access the Brooklyn ecosystem blueprints<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">add new services to CF with just a <em>yaml<\/em> blueprint<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">deploy services very fast with Clocker.io<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">add management policies to services<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Altoros: The metrics for quantifying the value of Cloud Foundry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">According to Peter Drucker, if you cannot measure something, you cannot control or manage it. Measuring the value provided by your PaaS is the only way to get hard data to win over your teams, management, and other stakeholders.
