Industries with plenty of manual back-office and customer-facing processes are prime candidates for RPA.<\/p>\n<p>In insurance, these manual operations are often the reason why application and claims processing becomes time-consuming. In some cases, it can take several weeks or months to complete. (Read our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/research-papers\/blockchain-for-insurance-from-preventing-fraud-to-automating-claims\/\">research paper<\/a> on this.)<\/p>\n<p>Employing RPA in insurance has the potential to not only improve operational efficiency by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/robotic-process-automation-in-insurance-whitepaper.pdf\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">up to 80%<\/a>, it can also ensure 100% compliance with the existing regulations when coded properly. Additionally, automation can reduce the cost of processing insurance claims by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/~\/media\/McKinsey\/Industries\/Financial%20Services\/Our%20Insights\/Time%20for%20insurance%20companies%20to%20face%20digital%20reality\/Digital-disruption-in-Insurance.ashx\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">as much as 30%<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Zurich-Robotic-Process-Automation-RPA-insurance-benefits.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Zurich-Robotic-Process-Automation-RPA-insurance-benefits-1024x534.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-36603\" \/><\/a><small>RPA benefits in insurance (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.infosysconsultinginsights.com\/insights\/robotic-process-automation\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Image credit<\/a>)<\/small><\/center><\/p>\n<p>A couple of years ago, Zurich Insurance Group, Switzerland&#8217;s largest insurer, saw the potential in RPA. The company set in motion a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ey.com\/gl\/en\/industries\/financial-services\/fso-case-study-how-can-automation-reduce-costs-while-enhancing-human-potential#\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">plan to incorporate RPA<\/a> to enhance their services and achieve more than $1 billion of cost improvements by 2018.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Reducing_costs_with_RPA_pilots\"><\/span>Reducing costs with RPA pilots<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In December 2014, Zurich Insurance Group worked alongside Ernst &#038; Young to create a proof-of-concept pilot involving RPA. By June 2015, the project was deployed within the group&#8217;s global life business. It provided the insurance company with the following benefits:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>51% cost reduction to the automated processes<\/li>\n<li>released 25% of the operational team capacity<\/li>\n<li>accelerated delivery of changes on existing platform development road maps<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;We basically redesigned the claims process for Zurich (Insurance Group),&#8221; said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/chris-lamberton-a06301\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Chris Lamberton<\/a>, EMEIA RPA Leader at Ernst &#038; Young. &#8220;The key part of this was over 70% efficiency in changing the process to be digital with RPA at the core. It only took us four weeks with two analysts to build that. Primarily staffed with members of the freed-up operation team, the center of excellence delivers new automated processes on a 2\u20134 week release cycle.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_36599\" style=\"width: 140px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Chris-Lamberton-EY.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36599\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Chris-Lamberton-EY-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"130\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-36599\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-36599\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><small>Chris Lamberton<\/small><\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;It now takes less than a week to pay claims compared to the industry average of 50 days. They&#8217;re also reserving less cash to pay actual claims. That&#8217;s a massive cashflow benefit to the business. There&#8217;s all sorts of benefits to fundamentally changing the process.&#8221; \u2014Chris Lamberton, Ernst &#038; Young<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In January 2016, RPA solutions were expanded to also include the company&#8217;s general insurance business.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Using_bots_to_issue_policies\"><\/span>Using bots to issue policies<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In July 2017, the insurer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/news\/zurich-and-capgemini-win-collaboration-award-for-robotic-process-automation\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">won<\/a> the Information Services Group Paragon Award for its RPA projects. The delivered programs made use of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueprism.com\/products\/intelligent-rpa-automation\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Prism<\/a>&#8216;s end-to-end process automation platform, which provides a scalable digital workforce consisting of software robots. This has enabled Zurich Insurance&#8217;s commercial service teams across Europe to focus on complex policies, while software bots issue standard policies.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our robots are set in motion, as soon as our internal policy administration system is notified of an incoming policy,&#8221; explained <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/joyjit-gorain-36ab2213\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Joyjit Gorain<\/a>, Head of Operational Performance Management at Zurich Insurance Group. <\/p>\n<p>According to him, the robots perform a set of data validations to align master and local policy terms, as well as book the complete policy details in the administration system. The bots then issue an invoice, draft policy documents in a standard format template, and finally issue policy documents to a handler for a quality review.<\/p>\n<p>The RPA programs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/robotics-insurance-joyjit-gorain\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">have enabled<\/a> Zurich Insurance to automate six applications flows per country, totaling 48 applications overall.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Zurich-Robotic-Process-Automation-RPA-issuance-diagram-v2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Zurich-Robotic-Process-Automation-RPA-issuance-diagram-v2-1024x558.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-36825\" \/><\/a><\/a><small>RPA issuance solution diagram (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UZSxtlr_xg8\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Image credit<\/a>)<\/small><\/center><\/p>\n<p>RPA also allowed the insurer to implement bots for its end-to-end process chain, where only 30\u201340% of transactions follow a &#8220;straight-through&#8221; path, with no human intervention required.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_36621\" style=\"width: 120px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Joyjit-Gorain-Zurich.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36621\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Joyjit-Gorain-Zurich-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"110\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-36621\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-36621\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><small>Joyjit Gorain<\/small><\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;We found that the issuance process for policies followed this pattern, but 60\u201370% of the workflow would often deviate from the standard route and follow an alternative logic tree. This could result from specific customization or missing data and information.&#8221;<br \/>\n\u2014Joyjit Gorain, Zurich Insurance Group<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In these scenarios, a bot resolves the process in one of the three ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">It resets or re-calibrates the process flow on its own, according to a predefined &#8216;exception&#8217; handling logic, and continues with the transaction.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">It continues with the rest of the process, requiring only partial manual intervention at the point of exception.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">It completely terminates the transaction, requiring a full manual intervention.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Regardless of the outcome, a bot leaves a predefined messaged with the corresponding transaction ID in its error logs. This is a really important moment of truth in life insurance. You want a point where there&#8217;s human contact with the customer, so you can provide empathy. We made sure not to remove that human element that&#8217;s required at that particular moment in truth.&#8221; \u2014Jason Cripps, Zurich Insurance Group<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Ernst &#038; Young invested significantly in the last 18 months building a tool specific to machine learning OCR for getting unstructured information like doctor&#8217;s notes or death certificates,&#8221; said Chris. &#8220;We built our own tool called SIRE that can allow robots to fully enact the human readable stuff that we find very easy that robots can&#8217;t really deal with. We wanted to build a new system where humans and technology coexist, where a robot will help a human with faster and quality delivery. Gartner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\/documents\/3556834\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">estimates<\/a> the RPA software market will grow by 41% until 2020.
