Another demo on the agenda was Project BlockHead, which is supposed to simplify the development of smart contract apps to further deploy them either to Cloud Foundry or Kubernetes.<\/p>\n<p>As usual, the call was led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/drmaximilien\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Maximilien<\/a> (aka Dr. Max) of IBM. Since then, the project was approved as a CF-Extension in December 2017.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Since January, we&#8217;ve been operating with the CF-Extensions PMC. The repo has been moved to CF incubator in GitHub,&#8221; said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/neil-macdougall-573b2b3\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Neil MacDougall<\/a> of SUSE. &#8220;Our focus for the last six months has been on version two.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The improved UI enbales developers to deploy apps and also increase the number of instances. The initial idea was to &#8220;quickly enable people who use Cloud Foundry and Kubernetes to also benefit from blockchain.&#8221; Now, it is being <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1KjxLgFou7THOyMaUgFJ1McDVNv80BYvOMFCYn8tuypA\/edit\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">submitted<\/a> to CF-Extensions.<\/p>\n<p>According to Nima, Project BlockHead aims to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">make Web3.js app development easier on Cloud Foundry and Kubernetes<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">simplify node deployment and management through a service broker<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">enable smart contract management as part of the service integration<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">possibly make the project available for production use with real integrations to public blockchain networks<\/li>\n<li>ensure the Web3.js app development is agnostic to the blockchain network it uses (expose services for nodes from different blockchain networks)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/interaction-model-between-project-blockhead-and-cloud-foundry-apps-cab-call.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/interaction-model-between-project-blockhead-and-cloud-foundry-apps-cab-call-1024x511.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-34197\" \/><\/a><small>The interaction model between the BlockHead service broker and Cloud Foundry apps (<a href=\"https:\/\/hackernoon.com\/project-blockhead-an-ethereum-smart-contract-service-broker-for-kubernetes-and-cloud-foundry-88390a3ac63f\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Image credit<\/a>)<\/small><\/center><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Right now, BlockHead uses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/tag\/ethereum\/\">Ethereum<\/a>, but that doesn&#8217;t mean that it has to,&#8221; Nima said. &#8220;It can support any blockchain network&#8221; (e.g., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/tag\/hyperledger\/\">Hyperledger<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>According to Nima, BlockHead makes use of the Open Service Broker API specification to build a service broker layer between a web app and the blockchain network. &#8220;The broker can be deployed on Kubernetes but not as standalone due to complications with Docker sockets,&#8221; he pointed out. &#8220;We are working to make that work. added Eric. &#8220;We haven&#8217;t seen much that&#8217;s surprising, so that&#8217;s good news.&#8221; He also highlighted the CAPI team&#8217;s progress in &#8220;allowing rolling updates on the Cloud Foundry v3 API.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The routing and container networking teams are proceeding with various aspects of the <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/cloudfoundry-attic\/istio-release\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Istio<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/envoyproxy\/envoy\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Envoy<\/a> integration,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The routing team is continuing to make incremental progress supporting coordination with Istio and Envoy components for the new routing control plane.<\/p>\n<p>The container networking team is also working on &#8220;various options to route internal traffic through Envoy to take advantage of its client-side load balancing capabilities.&#8221; Early bird registrations are open until July 20. With the conference taking place in October, they are still expecting a significant spike in registrations four weeks before the event. Call for papers notifications and other announcements will go out in the second week of July.<\/p>\n<p>Swarna also mentioned that the Cloud Foundry Foundation values <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudfoundry.org\/culture\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">had been updated<\/a>, and the Linux Foundation had recently published the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linuxfoundation.org\/publications\/open-source-jobs-report-2018\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Open Source Jobs report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The next CAB call is scheduled for 8 a.m. Pacific Time on Wednesday, July 18.
