That opens up a whole new paradigm of applications that can be built and one such application is TrueRec.&#8221; \u2014Nethaji Tummuru, SAP<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Currently at the pilot phase at SAP, it is a Node.js application built on the Cloud Foundry platform and AWS, making use of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/tag\/ethereum\/\">Ethereum<\/a> blockchain network. It simplifies the job application process by allowing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">individuals to store their identity, certificates, and employment history in a digital wallet<\/li>\n<li>recruiters to verify applicants&#8217; credentials in real time<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The main idea is to avoid wasting time\/money on re-requesting certificates and maintain sole ownership of data. According to Nethaji, TrueRec acts as a &#8220;decentralized credential issuing and verifying the network.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/nethaji-tummuru-sap-blockchain-truerec-cloud-foundry.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/nethaji-tummuru-sap-blockchain-truerec-cloud-foundry-1024x678.jpg\" alt=\"nethaji-tummuru-sap-blockchain-truerec-cloud-foundry\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-25839\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;TrueRec is a secure digital wallet for identity, economic, and employment credentials\u2014all being built on a blockchain&#8230;We are using blockchain as a proof to make sure that nothing is actually modified.&#8221; \u2014Nethaji Tummuru, SAP<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The app&#8217;s workflow comes in four steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">A user requests educational institutions (once) to issue his\/her qualifications.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">Fingerprints (hash values) of the credentials are stored in an individual&#8217;s digital wallet.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">Individuals can pass on their credentials to verifiers as needed.<\/li>\n<li>Verifiers will then compare the fingerprints of the credentials with values on the blockchain to protect against tampering.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/michael-kunzmann-sap-truerec-blockchain-cloud-foundry.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/michael-kunzmann-sap-truerec-blockchain-cloud-foundry-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"michael-kunzmann-sap-truerec-blockchain-cloud-foundry\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-25832\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;The whole strength of blockchain is you have a history of transactions.&#8221; \u2014Michael Kunzmann, SAP<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Scaling_with_Cloud_Foundry\"><\/span>Scaling with Cloud Foundry<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>TrueRec started as an experiment of how blockchain technology worked, according to the team. &#8220;We started with a lot of Docker containers,&#8221; says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/mariopon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mario Ponce<\/a>, Senior Software Architect at SAP. &#8220;At some point during development, we realized that we were investing a lot of time containerizing each application. We also needed basic support for databases to store meta data.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25804\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Mario-Ponce-sap-bio.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25804\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Mario-Ponce-sap-bio.png\" alt=\"Mario Ponce, SAP\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25804\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-25804\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><small>Mario Ponce<\/small><\/p><\/div>\n<p>The team decided to go further with a platform where they could just push applications and not worry about containers. One of the biggest issues, as well, was minimizing the downtime for when applications got deployed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Cloud Foundry was a natural choice for us,&#8221; said Mario. &#8220;It gave us the opportunity to scale up. We introduced components like RabbitMQ. We now have worker queues that are able to distribute the workload.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Today, the Ethereum Go client is still on the AWS platform, but the team has plans to move it onto Cloud Foundry.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Cloud Foundry gave us, as developers, the flexibility of just taking our apps and pushing to the platform. This gives us more time to focus on development and not work too much on containers.&#8221; \u2014Mario Ponce, SAP<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>By using the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.cloudfoundry.org\/devguide\/deploy-apps\/blue-green.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blue-green deployment<\/a> technique, the team was able to achieve near-to-zero downtime. This method involves having two identical production environments running concurrently\u2014one live (Blue) and one idle (Green). For example, each time new changes are made, they are done and tested on the Green idle environment. Moving forward, the team is looking to completely move everything onto Cloud Foundry and the SAP Cloud platform, as well as engage SAP API gateway. The app is constantly evolving\u2014for instance, the team is working on &#8220;self-destruction&#8221; of certificate links in case one wants them to be temporary.
