It is the largest bank in Canada, which has 16M+ customers and 80,000+ employees around the world, running around <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rbc.com\/newsroom\/_assets-custom\/videos\/technology-annual-report-2014.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">400 million transactions<\/a> per day. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/bruce-ross-b8059516\/?ppe=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bruce Ross<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ca.linkedin.com\/in\/linkfl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Francis Li<\/a> of RBC and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/suryaduggirala1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Surya Duggirala<\/a> of IBM shared the bank&#8217;s experience on its way to digital transformation at IBM InterConnect and Cloud Foundry Summit 2017.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our clients are looking for a digital experience,&#8221; said Bruce. &#8220;They want to see their money wherever they are, whenever they want to see it, and whatever form factor they want to see it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The way we interact with our customers is constantly evolving,&#8221; added Surya. &#8220;From simple queries to deep Q&#038;As, how we understand our data has changed. Where we run our workloads does not matter anymore.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IBM-InterConnect-2017-Online-Banking-Bluemix-Surya-Duggirala-v3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IBM-InterConnect-2017-Online-Banking-Bluemix-Surya-Duggirala-v3.jpg\" alt=\"IBM InterConnect 2017 Online Banking Bluemix Surya Duggirala v3\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-24775\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Digital is forcing us to unlearn and learn again.&#8221; \u2014Surya Duggirala, IBM<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The RBC&#8217;s decision to transform came out of the need to switch to a more efficient development cycle that would cater to evolving customer needs. However, RBC faced a bunch of challenges on their way to digital transformation:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_24691\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Francis-Li-RBC.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24691\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Francis-Li-RBC-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Francis Li\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-24691\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-24691\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><small>Francis Li<\/small><\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Redesigning legacy systems to work with a new technology<\/li>\n<li>Transforming monolithic apps into microservices<\/li>\n<li>Integrating cloud services<\/li>\n<li>Securing all applications<\/li>\n<li>Exposing internal resources through APIs<\/li>\n<li>Adopting a new organizational culture<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Running monolithic online web apps for years, RBC wanted &#8220;to go more Agile, go for more frequent releases, and add more functionalities,&#8221; said Francis. &#8220;To help us do that, we needed to leverage cloud, and Bluemix was one of our primary considerations at the time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;We selected the hardest and most complex online banking web page in production and ported that page to Bluemix.&#8221; \u2014Francis Li, RBC<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The question was, would Bluemix perform and scale well enough to be used for banking?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Online_banking_on_Cloud_Foundry_Bluemix\"><\/span>Online banking on Cloud Foundry \/ Bluemix<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>To evaluate Bluemix performance, the team created a prototype of a future app. According to Surya, the application would &#8220;simulate a customer-facing retail online banking scenario&#8221; to highlight the real-world requirements:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Support for 500\u2013600 transactions per second (tps) at sub-second response times<\/li>\n<li>Horizontal scaling with both static and auto-scaling<\/li>\n<li>Stable performance at a peak load for 12+ hours<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/end-to-end-workload-ibm-bluemix-royal-bank-of-canada-v11.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/end-to-end-workload-ibm-bluemix-royal-bank-of-canada-v11.png\" alt=\"end-to-end-workload-ibm-bluemix-royal-bank-of-canada-v11\" width=\"640\"  class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-24790\" \/><\/a><small>The prototype&#8217;s architecture and end-to-end load flow (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/blogs\/bluemix\/performance-case-study-bluemix-online-banking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Source<\/a>)<\/small><\/center><\/p>\n<p>With regard to the end-to-end load workflow shown above, Surya mentioned that the architecture &#8220;loosely followed the microservices design pattern&#8221;:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">The <strong>orchestrator service<\/strong> receives REST API calls from the browser UI, running account summary page with AngularJS.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>stub service<\/strong>, which represents back-end requests, returns pre-loaded back-end data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The both services were deployed in <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.cloudfoundry.org\/concepts\/diego\/dea-vs-diego.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DEA<\/a>\u2019s Warden containers, explained Surya.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Achieving_1500_transactions_per_second\"><\/span>Achieving 1,500+ transactions per second<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The prototype was tested in Bluemix Dedicated and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/ibm-bluemix-local-5-common-use-cases\/\">Bluemix Local<\/a> environments. Two JMeter load drivers were sending millions of HTTP requests to the app, using hundreds of concurrent clients. The sustained peak load was applied continuously for 6\u201324 hours as an endurance test to make sure that the app can withstand the peak load with no stability issues.<\/li>\n<p>First, the application was run on <b>Bluemix Dedicated<\/b>. Performance was stable for 24 hours, with the average 831 tps surpassing the required 500\u2013600 tps. Six application instances supported 21 million API requests with two JMeter drivers.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IBM-InterConnect-2017-Online-Banking-Bluemix-dedicated-results-v2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IBM-InterConnect-2017-Online-Banking-Bluemix-dedicated-results-v2.jpg\" alt=\"IBM InterConnect 2017 Online Banking Bluemix dedicated results v2\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-24639\" \/><\/a><small>Running 830+ tps on Bluemix Dedicated (<a href=\"https:\/\/myibm.ibm.com\/events\/interconnect\/all-sessions\/session\/2702A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Source<\/a>)<\/small><\/center><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Even at this peak load, only 25% of the DEA\u2019s capacity is used, leaving lots of room for other applications,&#8221; said Surya.<\/p>\n<p>Next, the application was run on <b>Bluemix Local<\/b> with the same static and auto-scaling techniques for horizontal scalability. Performance was also stable for 24 hours, achieving 760+ tps. Five application instances supported 4.75 million API requests with one JMeter driver.<\/p>\n<p>The results above were based on the performance when the DEA architecture was default for Bluemix. So, the team also evaluated how it would improve with <b>Cloud Foundry&#8217;s Diego<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IBM-InterConnect-2017-Online-Banking-Bluemix-diego-results.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IBM-InterConnect-2017-Online-Banking-Bluemix-diego-results.jpg\" alt=\"IBM InterConnect 2017 Online Banking Bluemix diego results\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-24648\" \/><\/a><small>Higher throughput on Diego (<a href=\"https:\/\/myibm.ibm.com\/events\/interconnect\/all-sessions\/session\/2702A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Source<\/a>)<\/small><\/center><\/p>\n<p>During the four-hour peak load, more than 53 million API calls resulted in 1,500+ ops per sec with an average 765 millisecond response time. &#8220;The average CPU consumption of each instance of the stub application is about 25%, which is about 6% of cell capacity,&#8221; Surya said.<\/p>\n<p>Surya&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/myibm.ibm.com\/events\/interconnect\/all-sessions\/session\/2702A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">presentation<\/a> and in-depth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/blogs\/bluemix\/performance-case-study-bluemix-online-banking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">write up<\/a> provide more details about this proof-of-concept. &#8220;Other major apps in the banking industry like wealth management, customer reward management, investment banking, and others can directly benefit from this work,&#8221; he notes. <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Adoption_and_production_roll_outs\"><\/span>Adoption and production roll outs<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The tests were able to meet the RBC&#8217;s requirements for throughput, scalability, and resiliency\u2014resulting to production. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/bruce-ross-b8059516\/?ppe=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bruce Ross<\/a> shared details of the Bluemix roll outs during a <a href=\"https:\/\/myibm.ibm.com\/events\/interconnect\/all-sessions\/session\/7309A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">keynote session<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have <b>30 Bluemix applications<\/b> in our production environment today. We have some of our most critical applications that are using Bluemix online banking, which has <b>12 million registered<\/b> customers on it,&#8221; said Bruce. &#8220;They\u2019re mission critical applications in production for us. We poured 20 years of data in the last six months into the RBC data lake. Not just born in the cloud, it is the cloud.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IBM-InterConnect-2017-Online-Banking-Bluemix-Bruce-Ross.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IBM-InterConnect-2017-Online-Banking-Bluemix-Bruce-Ross.jpg\" alt=\"IBM InterConnect 2017 Online Banking Bluemix Bruce Ross\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-24727\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Take the leap to use the new tech and be the early adopters. Agile, data, analytics, and cognitive APIs\u2014we\u2019ll be a Software-as-a-Service provider to our customers.&#8221;  \u2014Bruce Ross, RBC<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The adoption of Bluemix has helped RBC to move to a more Agile approach of development. Microservices have also made it easier and faster to deliver applications.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve got Bluemix Local and we&#8217;ve got Bluemix (Dedicated) in the public cloud. We can go seamlessly between them,&#8221; said Bruce. &#8220;IBM can handle the integration effort and we can focus on building the microservices.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bruce also emphasized how RBC was able to accelerate delivery with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/continuous-integration-and-continuous-delivery-in-ibm-bluemix\/\">continuous integration<\/a> and continuous deployment. &#8220;When you&#8217;re trying to do continuous integration to actually deploy in production, you have to look horizontally,&#8221; he explained.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;We used to deliver one new release of online banking a year. Now, we can do it in <b>as fast as we want<\/b>. We do it every two months, but we can do it faster, if we wish. Our development teams today are massively more productive. What used to take weeks\u2014getting a server, a middleware, and all these environments, so you can be productive\u2014can now be done in minutes.&#8221;<br \/>\n\u2014Bruce Ross, RBC<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to Bruce, the bank&#8217;s mobile app adoption is growing so fast that it will exceed the correlated web service usage within the next 6\u20138 months.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_new_culture_and_lessons_learned\"><\/span>A new culture and lessons learned<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Before any meaningful changes could happen, RBC itself had to transform. The culture of the organization needed to change. According to Bruce, they had to adopt these three principles:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">&#8220;Are we thinking about everything we do directly with a business outcome? If we can&#8217;t draw a straight line between what we&#8217;re doing and a business outcome, then we should talk to the manager, we&#8217;re doing the wrong thing.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">We have to take the leap to use the new technologies, to not be afraid of them, and to be the early deployers of them to see how they all connect together.<\/li>\n<li>We have to innovate for the future. We have to look three years ahead and then dedicate resources to it. We then try to advance it as quickly as we can.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IBM-InterConnect-2017-Online-Banking-Bluemix-Bruce-Ross-v2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IBM-InterConnect-2017-Online-Banking-Bluemix-Bruce-Ross-v2.jpg\" alt=\"IBM InterConnect 2017 Online Banking Bluemix Bruce Ross v2\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-24882\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;You don&#8217;t have to be an engineer to have an engineering culture.&#8221; \u2014Bruce Ross, RBC<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Getting legacy systems (and data) to work with new technology was also crucial to RBC. &#8220;Legacy is a massive strength that you can then exploit to create a new experience,&#8221; explained Bruce<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;It&#8217;s not just a digital relationship of everything that we did yesterday. It&#8217;s a completely new business.&#8221; \u2014Bruce Ross, RBC<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Bruce stressed that RBC can now focus on business metrics when developing products, such as how much money the company put in, what the mobile adoption rates are, etc.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Transforming_with_AI_mobile_and_blockchain\"><\/span>Transforming with AI, mobile, and blockchain<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Employing Bluemix, RBC has leveraged other technologies available through this platform.<\/p>\n<p>So far, RBC is working on utilizing Hyperledger-based IBM Blockchain to improve on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanbanker.com\/news\/canadian-banks-pick-ibm-blockchain-to-expand-digital-identity-project\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">digital identity management<\/a>.
