marks an event that many call one of Britain&#8217;s biggest robberies. Referred to as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/uknews\/crime\/11520077\/Hatton-Garden-raiders-empty-hundreds-of-safety-deposit-boxes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hatton Garden heist<\/a>, the robbery was successfully carried out by a gang of thieves, who made off with an estimated value of \u00a3200 million in diamonds and other jewellery. The actual value of the stolen goods was never revealed due to the lack of certifications for some of the lost items.<\/p>\n<p>The lack of provenance for luxury goods is the problem <a href=\"https:\/\/everledger.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Everledger<\/a>, a blockchain-based startup, aims to resolve, says its Founder and CEO, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/leannekemp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leanne Kemp<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;(Provenance) is the life story of an item and in the world of luxury goods, provenance matters, because you cannot separate the value of an item from its origin and its history,&#8221; notes Leanne.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;It [provenance] relates to diamonds, to watches, to art, and to jewelry, but there&#8217;s a problem. The world&#8217;s provenance is locked in paper. When provenance is lost, another word emerges and that word is risk.&#8221; \u2014Leanne Kemp, Everledger<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to Leanne, \u201cinternational headlines are plagued with stories of fraud, document tampering, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gemstone#Synthetic_and_artificial_gemstones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">synthetic stones<\/a>, black markets, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blood_diamond\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">conflict stones<\/a>.\u201d Most of these issues were rooted on a lack of visibility and provenance along the supply chain, underpinned by a paper-based certification system vulnerable to tampering.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IBM-InterConnect-2017-Blockchain-Leanne-Kemp.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IBM-InterConnect-2017-Blockchain-Leanne-Kemp.jpg\" alt=\"IBM InterConnect 2017 Blockchain Leanne Kemp\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22143\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;These problems are real, they&#8217;re quantifiable and they cost insurers $50 billion annually, but sadly and more importantly, they cost every single one of us&#8230;an increased cost of insurance.&#8221;<br \/>\n\u2014Leanne Kemp, Everledger<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_diamond_thumbprint_on_a_blockchain\"><\/span>A diamond thumbprint on a blockchain<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Everledger was created to minimize fraud, being a &#8220;digital global ledger that tracks and protects items of value.&#8221; The team has built a platform that brought greater transparency to the open market places and global supply chain\u2014by ensuring that the authenticity of the asset is secured and stored among all industry participants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe integrated the supply chain onto the same digital network creating a single version of the truth for all parties involved in the diamond trade,\u201d says Leanne. \u201cWe shared records visible across the industry participants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By involving major certification houses around the globe\u2014including those in America, India, Israel, and Belgium (Antwerp) where diamonds are graded and certified\u2014Everledger was able to create a digital thumbprint for individual diamonds.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Everledger-Blockchain-Diamond-metadata-thumbprint.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Everledger-Blockchain-Diamond-metadata-thumbprint.png\" alt=\"Everledger Blockchain Diamond metadata thumbprint\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-23259\" \/><\/a><small><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GAdjL-nultI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Image credit<\/a><\/small><\/center><\/p>\n<p>These unique identifiers consist of 40 metadata points, the laser inscription on the girdle, and the stone&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/4cs.gia.edu\/en-us\/4cs-diamond-quality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">four Cs<\/a>\u2014color, clarity, cut, and carat weight. These digital thumbprints would then be written on the blockchain.<\/p>\n<p>Everledger also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.enterpriselinuxinsights.com\/blockchain-startup-everledger-unveils-technology-digitally-certify-kimberley-process\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">makes use<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kimberleyprocess.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kimberley Process<\/a>, which started in the year 2000. What does this mean, though?<\/p>\n<p>Blockchain is a permanent, secure, and immutable ledger that records assets, participants, and transactions. She requests verification from Everledger and finds out that it&#8217;s a stolen diamond. The insurance company is notified about the stolen diamond and they take possession of it.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;We now know where diamonds are being sold and resold online in marketplaces, such as Amazon and eBay. We work with insurance companies on fraudulent claims, with Interpol and Europol as diamonds cross borders and enter into black markets. Key security is further enhanced by implementing a \u201csecure key\u201d using a tamper-resistant cryptocard (certified to the highest level\u2014FIPs 140-2 Level 4).<\/li>\n<li><strong>A highly auditable operating environment.<\/strong> Hardware and firmware audit logs provide information about any critical actions done to the system, such as replacing hardware or changing configurations.
