announcements from IBM and the company&#8217;s partners. Among the news was the reveal of IBM&#8217;s enterprise-grade blockchain service, which is based on the Linux Foundation&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/hyperledger-fabric-v1-0-to-bring-improved-transactions-and-a-pluggable-data-store\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hyperledger Fabric v1.0<\/a>. Available in the IBM Cloud, the blockchain is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/press\/us\/en\/pressrelease\/51840.wss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">secured<\/a> by IBM LinuxONE.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re building a blockchain for trust for a very simple reason-so you can conduct your business securely, meet all those terms and conditions for your business network and regulatory requirements,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ross-mauri-7911b052\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ross Mauri<\/a> of IBM. \u201cIt\u2019s also an infrastructure that\u2019s Agile so you can meet your business transformation goals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/ibm-interconnect-ross-mauri-keynote-v11.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/ibm-interconnect-ross-mauri-keynote-v11.jpg\" alt=\"ibm-interconnect-ross-mauri-keynote-v11\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22148\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;IBM Blockchain runs on the industry&#8217;s most secure Linux servers in the IBM cloud. It&#8217;s an architecture that&#8217;s built end-to-end for security and performance.&#8221; \u2014Ross Mauri, IBM<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve created an infrastructure where you write your application and worry about your business logic and blockchain network,\u201d added Ross. \u201cWhen it runs on our infrastructure, it inherits all the security transparently with zero code change and zero hit to performance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Ross, IBM Blockchain is safe even from government influence. &#8220;If the government came to IBM and subpoenaed us to give them your data, we couldn&#8217;t do that,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Only you have the keys to your data. Only you have access to it. Even IBM can&#8217;t get to it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_makes_it_different\"><\/span>What makes it different?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In previous posts, we&#8217;ve detailed what blockchains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/blockchain-for-trade-finance-real-time-visibility-and-reduced-fraud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">provide to supply chains<\/a>. In short, these are the key characteristics that blockchain introduces:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\"><strong>Consensus.<\/strong> All ledgers in the network are kept in sync and all agree to the whats and whens of a transaction.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\"><strong>Provenance.<\/strong> There are records of where each asset has been.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\"><strong>Immutability.<\/strong> Anything written on the ledger cannot be undone. This means you cannot delete records and you cannot insert them halfway through the blockchain.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Finality.<\/strong> Anything written in the blockchain cannot be disputed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So far, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/hyperledgers-sawtooth-lake-aims-at-a-thousand-transactions-per-second\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">security in blockchain<\/a> meant high availability and integrity. Encryption wasn&#8217;t in the picture yet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/ibm-interconnect-jerry-cuomo-keynote-v11.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/ibm-interconnect-jerry-cuomo-keynote-v11.jpg\" alt=\"ibm-interconnect-jerry-cuomo-keynote-v11\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22146\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;With IBM Blockchain, you can rapidly develop blockchain solutions. The idea is to use blockchain to have optimal document workflow, real-time visibility, and reduced fraud.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe believe that this new supply chain solution will be a transformative technology with the potential to completely disrupt and change the way global trade is done.\u201d \u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/bridget-van-kralingen-89524415\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bridget van Kralingen<\/a>, IBM<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Another vendor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/a-close-look-at-everledger-how-blockchain-secures-luxury-goods\/\">Everledger<\/a> uses blockchain on LinuxONE to do away with risky paper-based certification systems used in the tracking and authenticating of diamonds. The company now has 1.2 million diamonds secured on the blockchain.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IBM-InterConnect-2017-Blockchain-Leanne-Kemp.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IBM-InterConnect-2017-Blockchain-Leanne-Kemp.jpg\" alt=\"IBM InterConnect 2017 Blockchain Leanne Kemp\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22143\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;We built a platform that enables us to be able to bring greater transparency to the open marketplaces and global supply chain by ensuring that the authenticity of the asset is secured and stored amongst all industry participants.&#8221; \u2014Leanne Kemp, Everledger<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Identity_management\"><\/span>Identity management<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>IBM and SecureKey Technologies are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/press\/us\/en\/pressrelease\/51841.wss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">working together<\/a> to bring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/a-panel-blockchain-introduces-opportunities-in-identity-management\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">identity management<\/a> into blockchain. The collaboration aims at developing a new network for digital identity and attribute sharing based on IBM Blockchain.<\/p>\n<p>According to IBM, the network will be designed to make it easier for consumers to verify they are who they say they are, in a privacy-enhanced, security-rich, and efficient way. Consumers can use the network to instantly verify their identity for services, such as new bank accounts, driver\u2019s licenses, or utilities.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_22155\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/marie-wieck-ibm-interconnect-2017.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22155\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/marie-wieck-ibm-interconnect-2017.jpg\" alt=\"Marie Wieck\" width=\"150\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22155\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-22155\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><small>Marie Wieck<\/small><\/p><\/div>Currently still in the testing phase, the network is expected to go live in Canada later in 2017. Canadian consumers will be able to opt-in to the new blockchain-based service using a mobile app.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>What IBM is building with SecureKey and members of the digital identity ecosystem in Canada, including major banks, telecom companies, and government agencies, will help tackle the toughest challenges surrounding identity.\u201d \u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/mariewieck\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marie Wieck<\/a>, IBM<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Blockchain_for_energy\"><\/span>Blockchain for energy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>IBM and Energy-Blockchain Labs have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/press\/us\/en\/pressrelease\/51839.wss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">developed<\/a> the first blockchain-based green asset management platform based on Hyperledger Fabric v1.0.
