Watch the video!<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-3'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/a-panel-addresses-the-state-of-hyperledger-and-what-needs-improvement\/#Related_reading\" >Related reading<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-3'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/a-panel-addresses-the-state-of-hyperledger-and-what-needs-improvement\/#About_the_speakers\" >About the speakers<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_slowing_down_adoption\"><\/span>What is slowing down adoption?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This issue has been brought up in previous Hyperledger meetups, so it&#8217;s no surprise that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/Hyperledger-London\/events\/234852692\/\" target=\"_blank\">another panel<\/a> was in consensus (pun intended) when it comes to what the barriers to blockchain adoption are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>regulation and legal constraints<\/li>\n<li>privacy and security<\/li>\n<li>standardization<\/li>\n<li>knowledge proliferation<\/li>\n<li>technical debt<\/li>\n<li>the lack of collaboration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Hyperledger-London-Anthony-ODowd-Mike-Hearn-John-McLean-Barry-Childe-Sofus-Mortensen-Mark-Simpson-James-Carlyle-3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Hyperledger-London-Anthony-ODowd-Mike-Hearn-John-McLean-Barry-Childe-Sofus-Mortensen-Mark-Simpson-James-Carlyle-3.jpg\" alt=\"Hyperledger London Anthony O&#039;Dowd Mike Hearn John McLean Barry Childe Sofus Mortensen Mark Simpson James Carlyle 3\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20694\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To get into more detail, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/anthony-o-dowd-847a5069\" target=\"_blank\">Anthony O&#8217;Dowd<\/a> of IBM explained that financial services which is commonly brought up when talking about distributed ledger technology is a <strong>heavily regulated<\/strong> industry. He explains that regulators &#8220;whilst they&#8217;re optimistic and progressive, they&#8217;ll be cautious. They&#8217;re not saying no. They&#8217;re just being cautious.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;(Adoption) takes time because there are necessary regulatory concerns.&#8221; \u2014Anthony O&#8217;Dowd, IBM<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/john-mclean-47001a5b\" target=\"_blank\">John McLean<\/a> of IBM added some of the concerns regulators had with some of the <strong>legal constraints<\/strong>. &#8220;Is a smart contract really a smart contract? What are the legal constructs?&#8221; he asked.<\/p>\n<p>As far as <strong>privacy and security<\/strong> is concerned, it will boil down to how each incubation achieves this. It also comes down to <strong>standardization<\/strong> and how individual incubations should be able to work with one another in a modular fashion.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;It&#8217;s a case of evolving the base capability of Hyperledger, driving that standardization forward, and executing over the next couple of years.&#8221; \u2014John McLean, IBM<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When it comes to <strong>knowledge proliferation<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/barry-childe-049a83\" target=\"_blank\">Barry Childe<\/a> of HSBC acknowledged the work that R3 and the Hyperledger Project has done to spread education, but he noted &#8220;that level of knowledge hasn&#8217;t proliferated across the business. A lot of this is just sitting there and we really don&#8217;t understand the implications of this technology.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Hyperledger-London-Anthony-ODowd-Mike-Hearn-John-McLean-Barry-Childe-Sofus-Mortensen-Mark-Simpson-James-Carlyle-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Hyperledger-London-Anthony-ODowd-Mike-Hearn-John-McLean-Barry-Childe-Sofus-Mortensen-Mark-Simpson-James-Carlyle-1.jpg\" alt=\"Hyperledger London Anthony O&#039;Dowd Mike Hearn John McLean Barry Childe Sofus Mortensen Mark Simpson James Carlyle 1\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20693\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;You need to make things very demonstrable and very real, not just doing it inside the labs.&#8221;<br \/>\n\u2014Barry Childe, HSBC<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/sofusmortensen\/de\" target=\"_blank\">Sofus Mortensen<\/a> of Nordea Markets explained that for many banks that have existed for a very long time, the biggest issue is <strong>technical debt<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;We have so many systems that can be so hard to implement this (distributed ledger) technology into it.&#8221; \u2014Sofus Mortensen, Nordea Markets<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Banks and other financial services are naturally competing with one another, so getting them to talk and actually <strong>collaborate<\/strong> is another challenge. Collaboration already isn&#8217;t perfect within large organizations, having to do that with a completely different entity adds a whole new level of problems.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;If you work in a big organization, collaboration inside the organization is quite difficult.&#8221;<br \/>\n\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/mark-simpson-43494\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Simpson<\/a>, RBS<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_needs_to_happen\"><\/span>What needs to happen?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>It&#8217;s been more than a year since the inception of the Hyperledger Project. Moving forward, the panel agreed that these are the things that have to be focused and improved on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>interoperability<\/li>\n<li>consensus<\/li>\n<li>transparency<\/li>\n<li>modularity<\/li>\n<li>standardization<\/li>\n<li>community<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It was stated that pretty much everyone in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/Hyperledger-London\/events\/234852692\/\" target=\"_blank\">London Hyperledger meetup<\/a> wants the Hyperledger Project to bring everyone together under <b>one community<\/b> and <b>governance model<\/b>. With everyone talking to one another, duplication can be minimized if not avoided outright.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Hyperledger-London-Anthony-ODowd-Mike-Hearn-John-McLean-Barry-Childe-Sofus-Mortensen-Mark-Simpson-James-Carlyle-4.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Hyperledger-London-Anthony-ODowd-Mike-Hearn-John-McLean-Barry-Childe-Sofus-Mortensen-Mark-Simpson-James-Carlyle-4.jpg\" alt=\"Hyperledger London Anthony O&#039;Dowd Mike Hearn John McLean Barry Childe Sofus Mortensen Mark Simpson James Carlyle 4\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20702\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;(Hyperledger) should allow people to reuse existing modules that exist within the project, so that different codebases are not constantly reinventing everything from scratch.&#8221; \u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jamescarlyle\" target=\"_blank\">James Carlyle<\/a>, R3 CEV<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Hyperledger Project should become a hub for <b>innovation<\/b>, <b>transparency<\/b>, and <b>modularity<\/b>. &#8220;It&#8217;s all about operating in all industries and doing that with discipline and solving real-world problems that provide benefit,&#8221; said Barry Childe.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Hyperledger-London-Anthony-ODowd-Mike-Hearn-John-McLean-Barry-Childe-Sofus-Mortensen-Mark-Simpson-James-Carlyle-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Hyperledger-London-Anthony-ODowd-Mike-Hearn-John-McLean-Barry-Childe-Sofus-Mortensen-Mark-Simpson-James-Carlyle-2.jpg\" alt=\"Hyperledger London Anthony O&#039;Dowd Mike Hearn John McLean Barry Childe Sofus Mortensen Mark Simpson James Carlyle 2\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20695\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Its goal is to be this global entity to represent the distributed ledger technology community but with discipline.&#8221; \u2014Barry Childe, HSBC<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><P>As John McLean noted, the long-term goal is that with Hyperledger as an open community, eventually a <strong>single standard codebase<\/strong> for the distributed ledger technology can be developed much like how TCP\/IP became the standard for network communications.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Want_details_Watch_the_video\"><\/span>Want details?
