(IBM wrote much of the original Fabric&#8217;s code\u2014when the technology was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/technical-introduction-to-hyperledger-fabric\/\">Open Blockchain<\/a> project.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a lot of mixing of the big data, the IoT, and blockchain,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd there are three stages of getting involved with these technologies: understanding concepts, understanding the technologies themselves, then figuring out how you&#8217;re going to use them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bruce cited research by IBM and Accenture that showed blockchain technologies growing from $210 million in revenue worldwide this year to $2.3 billion by the year 2021, representing an annual growth rate of more than 60%.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Not_always_a_good_fit\"><\/span>Not always a good fit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Before outlining several use cases, he talked about areas in which blockchain is <em>not<\/em> a good fit. These areas include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High-performance transactions, where millisecond-level performance is needed<\/li>\n<li>Smaller organizations that don&#8217;t have large numbers of business relationships<\/li>\n<li>Database replacement<\/li>\n<li>Transaction processing replacement<\/li>\n<li>Messaging solutions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Hyperledger-Blockchain-NYC-Bruce-Weed.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Hyperledger-Blockchain-NYC-Bruce-Weed.jpg\" alt=\"Hyperledger Blockchain NYC Bruce Weed\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18367\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He then reminded attendees of four general areas in which blockchain adds value:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As a shared ledger<\/li>\n<li>To develop smart contracts (in which business rules are written into the contracts)<\/li>\n<li>To maintain privacy. Transactions need to be private, as do the parties to them. They also need to be authenticated. Encryption is central to all these processes.<\/li>\n<li>To establish consensus among trusted parties<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cThe beauty of blockchain is that you can go back and audit it,\u201d he said. As it is an agreed-upon, immutable record use of blockchain in business networks \u201cshould drive good behavior, because you know (this is where) you&#8217;re going to get audited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then it was time to outline the use cases.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"KYCK\"><\/span>KYCK!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The first is called <a href=\"http:\/\/kyck.sg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">KYCK!<\/a> and focuses on \u201cknow your customer\u201d requirements in exchanges and brokerage accounts in Southeast Asia. KYCK! is a new company out of Singapore, and is included within the IBM High Security Business Network. The company&#8217;s goal is to deliver optimal client on-boarding processes, and has features in the areas of document verification, personal data security, and blockchain identities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Hyperledger-Blockchain-NYC-KYCK.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Hyperledger-Blockchain-NYC-KYCK.jpg\" alt=\"Hyperledger Blockchain NYC KYCK\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18368\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"JPX\"><\/span>JPX<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Bruce then moved onto the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpx.co.jp\/english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Japan Exchange Group<\/a> (known as JPX), the world&#8217;s largest bourse (after NYSE Euronext and NASDAQ), and which is working with IBM Japan to test a blockchain market infrastructure proof-of-concept (POC). The Tokyo and Osaka exchanges are included in this project, along with a regulatory agency and clearinghouse. The exchange lists more than 3,500 companies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Hyperledger-Blockchain-NYC-JPX.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Hyperledger-Blockchain-NYC-JPX.jpg\" alt=\"Hyperledger Blockchain NYC JPX\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18369\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Deutsche_Bundesbank\"><\/span>Deutsche Bundesbank<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Moving to financial services in Europe, Bruce then mentioned the <a href=\"http:\/\/deutschebundesbank.de\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Deutsche Bundesbank<\/a> (the central bank of Germany), which has built a prototype to trade securities. Code from the Hyperledger Project forms the prototypes underlying protocol, as the bank looks to clear trades in close to real time while reducing expenses and increased interoperability between and among exchanges.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Hyperledger-Blockchain-NYC-Deutsche-Bundesbank.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Hyperledger-Blockchain-NYC-Deutsche-Bundesbank.jpg\" alt=\"Hyperledger Blockchain NYC Deutsche Bundesbank\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18370\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Kouvola_Innovation\"><\/span>Kouvola Innovation<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>More European blockchain activity was featured with a look at <a href=\"http:\/\/kinno.fi\/en\/front-page\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kouvola Innovations&#8217;s<\/a> effort to track the location of shipping containers through shipping lanes. The Finnish company is actually owned by the city of Kouvola, a major rail and road transportation hub located about 80 miles north of Helsinki. This project treats containers as things in an IBM Watson IoT deployment and links them to a blockchain.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Hyperledger-Blockchain-NYC-Kouvola-Innovation.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Hyperledger-Blockchain-NYC-Kouvola-Innovation.jpg\" alt=\"Hyperledger Blockchain NYC Kouvola Innovation\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18371\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Everledger\"><\/span>Everledger<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Bruce also mentioned the UK-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/a-close-look-at-everledger-how-blockchain-secures-luxury-goods\/\">Everledger project<\/a>, which offers a permanent ledger for diamond certification and transactions. Diamond owners and claimants, as well as insurance companies and law enforcement agencies, are all served by Everledger&#8217;s verification processes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Hyperledger-Blockchain-NYC-Everledger.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Hyperledger-Blockchain-NYC-Everledger.jpg\" alt=\"Hyperledger Blockchain NYC Everledger\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18372\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He passed along some interesting stats to attendees about the diamond business, as well.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Hyperledger-NYC-Everledger-facts.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Hyperledger-NYC-Everledger-facts.png\" alt=\"Hyperledger NYC Everledger facts\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-18345\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Walmart\"><\/span>Walmart<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A return to the US found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/blockchain-at-walmart-tracking-food-from-farm-to-fork\/\">Walmart<\/a> working with IBM to integrate big data, the IoT, and the blockchain technology in a supply chain to track pork shipments originating in China. Every item shipped has data imprinted upon the blockchain about its origin, processing, shipping, storage temperature, and expiration date. Specific IoT devices read and enter information along this blockchain, which becomes the single source of information for this entire business.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/walmart-blockchain-hyperledger-fabric.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/walmart-blockchain-hyperledger-fabric-1024x581.jpg\" alt=\"walmart-blockchain-hyperledger-fabric\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-18388\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In concluding, Bruce said \u201cpeople should walk before they start running (with blockchain). Start small, do a POC or pilot project, and determine your best use case before you start.
