All of the four are present in Daimler&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/group.mercedes-benz.com\/innovation\/specials\/electric-mobility\/case.html?r=dai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CASE<\/a> growth strategy for 2020. (The acronym stands for Connected, Autonomous, Shared, and Electric.)<\/p>\n<p>To this end, the German automobile manufacturer partnered with Pivotal to deliver a significantly updated version of the <em>Mercedes me<\/em> app\u2014which was initially <a href=\"http:\/\/media.daimler.com\/marsMediaSite\/en\/instance\/ko.xhtml?oid=9918327&#038;ls=L3NlYXJjaHJlc3VsdC9zZWFyY2hyZXN1bHQueGh0bWw_c2VhcmNoU3RyaW5nPW1lcmNlZGVzK21lJnNlYXJjaElkPTAmc2VhcmNoVHlwZT1kZXRhaWxlZCZib3JkZXJzPXRydWUmcmVzdWx0SW5mb1R5cGVJZD00MDYyNiZ2aWV3VHlwZT1saXN0JnNvcnREZWZpbml0aW9uPVBVQkxJU0hFRF9BVC0yJnRodW1iU2NhbGVJbmRleD0wJnJvd0NvdW50c0luZGV4PTU!&#038;rs=8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">launched back in 2014<\/a>. For cars without the built-in functionality, access can still be provided through a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercedes-benz.co.uk\/passengercars\/being-an-owner\/mercedes-me-adapter.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Mercedes me<\/em> adapter<\/a>. The app&#8217;s services are subdivided into five primary categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\"><b>Connect<\/b>: provides details for diagnostics, remote online services, live traffic information, etc. One of the greatest features is remote parking, when a driver just steps out and watches how the car is being parked by the app. (Check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=k_o-H1j4zZs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this video<\/a> to see this in action.)<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\"><b>Assist<\/b>: helps with vehicle repairs, locating genuine parts, roadside assistance, and warranties.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\"><b>Finance<\/b>: helps in car payment plans, leasing, and insurance.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\"><b>Inspire<\/b>: a facility where new ideas for Mercedes-Benz can be developed and discovered.<\/li>\n<li><b>Move<\/b>: shared driving through car2go and includes additional services, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reach-now.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">moovel<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blacklane.com\/en\/how-it-works\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Blacklane<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/de.mytaxi.com\/en\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mytaxi<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Mercedes-Benz-daimler-pivotal-car-app.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Mercedes-Benz-daimler-pivotal-car-app.jpg\" alt=\"Mercedes-Benz-daimler-pivotal-car-app\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18147\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Through these services, customers gain access to connected driving. With <em>Mercedes me<\/em> connect, users are able to remotely connect to their cars and see information that will help with maintenance and diagnostics. They can also remotely control their cars though currently limited to functions, such as ignition, temperature, and locking \/ unlocking.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pay_as_you_go\"><\/span>Pay as you go<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>As mentioned earlier, just like other automotive companies, Mercedes-Benz and Daimler have seen a new trend in the automotive industry\u2014emergence of flexible car ownership models. Shared driving is the answer to a new business model, which caters to customers that need cars on a pay-per-use basis.<\/p>\n<p><em>Mercedes me<\/em> users can do exactly this via the app&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercedes-benz-mobility.com\/en\/innovations\/mobility-services\/history-of-the-dms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">car2go<\/a> service. The first part was the &#8220;discovery and framing phase&#8221; where they got everything started. The second part was the &#8220;iterative approach&#8221; phase: from iteration to iteration, they created use cases that immediately got feedback from customers and user studies. That feedback then went directly into the use case.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Mercedes-Benz-daimler-pivotal.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Mercedes-Benz-daimler-pivotal.jpg\" alt=\"Mercedes Benz daimler pivotal\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17869\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Manuel emphasized the need for Mercedes-Benz to quickly react to customer feedback and how Cloud Foundry and the microservices paradigm makes this possible.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;With the microservices architecture, you have the foundation where you are free to choose whatever you want.&#8221; \u2014Manuel Birke, Mercedes-Benz<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Along with Pivotal Cloud Foundry, the development team made use of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jenkins.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jenkins<\/a> for continuous integration and rapid delivery, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.spring.io\/spring-boot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spring Boot<\/a> to add flexibility\/scalability.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Lessons_learned\"><\/span>Lessons learned<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In addition to the shortened development time, Mercedes-Benz and Daimler were able to learn how to adapt to the dynamic nature of Cloud Foundry. Some of their takeaways include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">Make sure that everyone understands the mission, the value of the mission, and how they can participate in the mission. Everyone in the organization should be involved with the development team and communicate often. Have a mindset of losing and winning together.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">Have a hybrid approach. You need to be Agile and have regular sprints, but you also need to have a mid-term and long-term vision. In particular, a long-term vision of how the different parts of the program fit together is required.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">Make sure you can decouple the workflow from the surrounding world so you don&#8217;t need to depend on development cycles.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">Development plan needs to be agile and dynamic enough to adapt to various situations.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">Pair programming is absolutely necessary. <\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">Bug fixes should be seen as an opportunity for improvement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Mercedes-Benz-daimler-pivotal-car-app-v2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Mercedes-Benz-daimler-pivotal-car-app-v2.jpg\" alt=\"Mercedes-Benz-daimler-pivotal-car-app-v2\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18167\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Results_and_plans_for_the_future\"><\/span>Results and plans for the future<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Relying on Pivotal Cloud Foundry, the minimum viable product was launched in six months. With a PaaS and microservices-based approach, Daimler can now quickly deliver updates based on customer feedback. <em>Mercedes me<\/em> already has over 100,000 downloads on Google Play alone.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s interesting to watch how the company is evolving on their digital path to self-driving and emission-free \/ electric vehicles. Mercedes-Benz&#8217;s new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercedes-benz.com\/en\/innovation\/autonomous\/the-new-e-class-on-the-road-to-autonomous-driving-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">E-Class<\/a> automobiles is the company&#8217;s answer to autonomous driving. As for electric driving, Mercedes-Benz has introduced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercedes-benz.com\/en\/next\/e-mobility\/concept-eq-mobility-revisited\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EQ brand<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/group-media.mercedes-benz.com\/marsMediaSite\/en\/instance\/ko\/New-strategic-future-initiative-adVANce-and-Vision-Van-Merce.xhtml?oid=13569208\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">adVANce<\/a> initiative.<\/p>\n<p>All of these go hand in hand with Daimler&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/group.mercedes-benz.com\/innovation\/specials\/electric-mobility\/case.html?r=dai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CASE strategy<\/a> to have all their vehicles emission-free, connected, and have autonomous features by 2020. It&#8217;s really amazing that Cloud Foundry is helping to foster this great movement\u2014however, obviously, there&#8217;s more than that to this platform.
