Having a legal identity is a basic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/about-us\/universal-declaration-of-human-rights\" target=\"_blank\">human right<\/a> and not having one restricts a person&#8217;s access to such essential services and functions as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Healthcare<\/li>\n<li>Education<\/li>\n<li>Government assistance programs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition to those listed above, having no legal identity severely limits a person&#8217;s access to financial services like simply having a bank account.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One of the social problems that we&#8217;ve been noticing is that people in underbanked countries don&#8217;t have a financial structure that they can build wealth upon. Even if they have a piece of land with a house built on top of it, because of the unsafe nature of the country they&#8217;re based in, that land can be taken away from them the next day,&#8221; said Joseph.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This would not be a good structure to build upon and if they don&#8217;t have wealth they can&#8217;t demand other financial products at the end of the day. It feels like a foundation layer needs to be established for underbanked countries to demand more financial products.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Blockchain-Hyperledger-SF-Joseph-Yoo-George-Orn-Identity-B.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Blockchain-Hyperledger-SF-Joseph-Yoo-George-Orn-Identity-B.jpg\" alt=\"Blockchain Hyperledger SF Joseph Yoo George Orn Identity B\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17842\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Underbanked people are the primary audience that doesn&#8217;t have identity currently.&#8221;<br \/>\n\u2014Joseph Yoo, PwC<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Without financial services, a person&#8217;s economic growth also becomes limited. As Joseph pointed out, this can be an issue in a remittance scenario, where &#8220;some countries don&#8217;t have a digital identity in a secure platform. They lack the certainty of knowing that someone sending money from the U.S. is actually going to somebody in an underbanked country and to an actual person.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Where_does_blockchain_come_in\"><\/span>Where does blockchain come in?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>George mentioned an interesting statistic wherein about 80% of underbanked people don&#8217;t have a bank account but have access to mobile phones. While not quite 80%, Pew Research Center has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/global\/2016\/02\/22\/smartphone-ownership-and-internet-usage-continues-to-climb-in-emerging-economies\/\" target=\"_blank\">detailed report<\/a> on smartphone ownership in emerging economies.<\/p>\n<p>There are already companies running blockchain payments through mobile phones, so developing an official identity around that is within the realm of possibility. The problem now is how do we define a person&#8217;s identity in the blockchain?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Are you going to tie their DNA to a blockchain? Are you going to tie their fingerprints to a blockchain?&#8221; asked George. &#8220;Sometimes facial features or fingerprints change over time. How can we contain that?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Blockchain-Hyperledger-SF-Joseph-Yoo-George-Orn-Identity-C.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Blockchain-Hyperledger-SF-Joseph-Yoo-George-Orn-Identity-C.jpg\" alt=\"Blockchain Hyperledger SF Joseph Yoo George Orn Identity C\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17843\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;The real crux at this point is what are the standards for someone&#8217;s identity?&#8221; \u2014George Orn, PwC<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Standards_and_security\"><\/span>Standards and security<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>While the idea is sound, it all boils down to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/a-panel-cooperation-is-key-for-blockchain-development-in-finance\/\" target=\"_blank\">cooperation and reaching a consensus standard<\/a>. If we&#8217;re talking about developing secure digital identities that are official and legal, then governments will need to weigh in on the discussion.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of the standard, the platform will need to be secure. Identities have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripwire.com\/state-of-security\/security-data-protection\/hackers-steal-fingerprints\/#\" target=\"_blank\">stolen<\/a> before and Bitcoin has already been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/markets\/2016\/08\/03\/the-bitfinex-bitcoin-hack-what-we-know-and-dont-know\/\" target=\"_blank\">hacked<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Want_details_Watch_the_video\"><\/span>Want details?
