In May 9, 2016, Jerry Brown gave an executive order to continue saving water to offset effects of persistent droughts. The <a href=\"https:\/\/ca.water.usgs.gov\/california-drought\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">drought report<\/a> from the California Water Science Center provides more details.<\/p>\n<p><center><small><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/California-Water-Science-Center-Drought.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/California-Water-Science-Center-Drought.png\" alt=\"California Water Science Center Drought\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17275\" \/><\/a>Source: California Water Science Center<\/small><\/center><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_drought_action_plan\"><\/span>A drought action plan<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>At the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/Predix\/events\/229689148\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Predix meetup<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/abhilashshrivastava\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Abhilash Shrivastava<\/a>, Graduate Research Assistant at San Francisco State University, discussed this problem, outlining how IoT solutions can cope with droughts\u2014which is applicable to many other parts of the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout <strong>40%<\/strong> of the San Francisco State University campus is covered by lawns demanding a significant use of water for irrigating them,\u201d said Abhilash. <\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Abhilash-Shrivastava-ge-predix-attacks-water-problems.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Abhilash-Shrivastava-ge-predix-attacks-water-problems.jpg\" alt=\"Abhilash-Shrivastava-ge-predix-attacks-water-problems\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17254\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThere was no intelligent automation for the sprinklers on various grounds, and no soil-moisture measurement or calculation. This means there was a lot of manual work.\u201d<br \/>\n\u2014Abhilash Shrivastava, San Francisco State University<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At the same time, the university looks at meeting California&#8217;s 25% mandatory <a href=\"https:\/\/resources.ca.gov\/california_water_action_plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">water conservation regulation<\/a>. Within this initiative, a <a href=\"https:\/\/sustain.sfsu.edu\/water\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">drought action plan<\/a> was introduced at the campus, including some software engineering efforts.<\/p>\n<p>One of the solutions developed within the San Francisco State University aims at preventing plant and soil destruction and optimizing water usage by <em>estimating soil moisture<\/em> and <em>collecting weather data<\/em>. Though a relatively small-scale project, it may have implications for the state of California as a whole and for the world.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Predix_comes_to_bear_on_the_problem\"><\/span>How Predix comes to bear on the problem<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The system is driven by GE&#8217;s Predix platform\u2014along with AngularJS, Polymer, nginx, and Grunt. Abhilash said several Predix services were used to construct this project, including UAA, Time Series, asset management, view service, and Logstash capabilities, as well as the analytics catalog service.<\/p>\n<p>The team designed the following microservices-based architecture:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Predix-Abhilash-Architecture.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Predix-Abhilash-Architecture.png\" alt=\"Predix - Abhilash Architecture\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-17238\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Predix platform introduced numerous possibilities for the engineering team:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>REST-based architecture<\/li>\n<li>Microservices, which allowed independent development and reusable services<\/li>\n<li>Reusable UI components<\/li>\n<li>In-built security<\/li>\n<li>Seed apps and detailed documentation<\/li>\n<li>The abilities to tune, optimize, load balance, and reconfigure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>From a high-level view, the systems tracks weather data from the OpenWeather API (humidity, temperature, etc.), analyzes it, and generates appropriate triggers\/actions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Predix-Abhilash-How-it-Works.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Predix-Abhilash-How-it-Works.png\" alt=\"Predix - Abhilash How it Works\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17239\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Abhilash provided a slide illustrating the system&#8217;s real-time data flow:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Predix-Abhilash-Data-Flow.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Predix-Abhilash-Data-Flow.png\" alt=\"Predix - Abhilash Data Flow\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17240\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_results\"><\/span>The results<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>He said the project was \u201ccost-effective, reducing water bills; maximized the soil&#8217;s absorption rate, resulting in less money spent on lawn maintenance; and was environment-friendly with less manual intervention.&#8221; Abhilash estimates annual savings for the campus between <strong>1.6 million<\/strong> and <strong>2.3 million gallons<\/strong> of water, as well as reduced expenses by <strong>US$25,000<\/strong> (excluding labor).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Predix-Abhilash-Pointing.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Predix-Abhilash-Pointing-1024x678.jpg\" alt=\"Predix Abhilash Pointing\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-17236\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;The project has been successful in gaining connectivity and automating the sprinkler system, creating a dashboard with analytics on water usage, determining how much water was needed for the soil and monitoring water usage.&#8221; \u2014Abhilash Shrivastava, San Francisco State University<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_the_future_of_the_project\"><\/span>What&#8217;s the future of the project?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This smart watering system will evolve further. As might be expected, Abhilash would like to develop a mobile app \u201cto control the sprinklers remotely,\u201d continue to enhance the analytics, and create an anomaly-detection system for damaged sprinklers.<\/p>\n<p>Water issues are among the most important throughout the world. Wars are fought over water, people die because of a lack of it, and growing populations in and near deserts will continue to demand more of it.
