Back in May, the SWIFT institute released <a href=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2777404\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a report on blockchain<\/a>, which ended with the finding of &#8220;little short-term payoff.&#8221; Furthermore, SWIFT and Accenture released another joint report, which tagged blockchain as &#8220;not mature enough.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Robert listed general challenges to the adoption of blockchain in finance.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Standardization<\/strong><\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>There needs to be a consensus in how transactions are processed and how much data is shared.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li><strong>Cross-institution consensus mechanism<\/strong><\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>There needs to be a secure centralized platform.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li><strong>Mining incentive and control<\/strong><\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>Mining could be built into shared services in the blockchain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li><strong>Integration<\/strong><\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>A system of record needs to be included in any blockchain integration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Adoption_predictions\"><\/span>Adoption predictions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>While it might seem too early for blockchain to make big waves in finance, Robert had some predictions in mind for long-term adoption.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Early adopters<\/strong><\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>2016: Demonstration, tutorials, and proof-of-concept systems.<\/li>\n<li>2017: Proofs-of-concept become pilots.<\/li>\n<li>2018: Venture capitalist funded projects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li><strong>Early majority<\/strong><\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>2019: Bank system refresh cycle funding.<\/li>\n<li>2020: Funded projects join emerging communities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Though blockchain seems poised to disrupt the financial world, there are already prime movers that are competing with traditional financial services. These include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/help\/863171203733904\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pay.google.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pay.amazon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amazon<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baifubao.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Baidu<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intl.alipay.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alipay<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/global.tenpay.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tencent<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_public_publishsubscribe_queue\"><\/span>A public publish\/subscribe queue<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Despite the studies, Robert maintained interest in blockchain and praised it as a &#8220;great systems integration pattern, which is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/support\/knowledgecenter\/SSFKSJ_9.0.0\/com.ibm.mq.pro.doc\/q004870_.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">publish and subscribe queue<\/a>.&#8221; According to him, &#8220;those have been around for decades, used in many different ways&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He describes a publish and subscribe queue as a system or a group of systems that want to talk to each other. If one system needed to send a message, it would simply publish to a node queue. Then, any other system that would want to receive the message would subscribe to the same queue.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Blockchain-Hyperledger-Use-Cases-Robert-Boyd-Publish-Subscribe-Queue.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Blockchain-Hyperledger-Use-Cases-Robert-Boyd-Publish-Subscribe-Queue.jpg\" alt=\"Blockchain Hyperledger Use Cases Robert Boyd Publish Subscribe Queue\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16017\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to Robert, the blockchain as a publish and subscribe queue has some technical advantages.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mutual ledger<\/strong><\/li>\n<ul>\n<li type=circle>The ledger serves as a single source for all messages from any actor to another actor.<\/li>\n<li type=circle>Fewer point-to-point integrations and batch file exchanges.<\/li>\n<li type=circle style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">Metadata source is identified in the message itself.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li type=disc><strong>Distributed<\/strong><\/li>\n<ul>\n<li type=circle style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">Better availability as the chain persists so long as one node remains active.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li type=disc><strong>Immutable persistent messages<\/strong><\/li>\n<ul>\n<li type=circle>One agreed source as part of the overall financial services system upgrade replaces multiple file archives and simplifies audit process.<\/li>\n<li type=circle style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">Data is immutable and cannot be changed without leaving a signature.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li type=disc><strong>Real-time<\/strong><\/li>\n<ul>\n<li type=circle>Settlement is virtually done in real time rather than delayed batch files and lagging reconciliation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Examples_of_a_single-process_implementation\"><\/span>Examples of a single-process implementation<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Robert went on to describe some finance use cases where blockchain could be applied as a single pub\/sub queue. In this scenario, he mentioned two: Verified by Visa and credit card purchase chargeback processes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Blockchain-Hyperledger-Use-Cases-Robert-Boyd-Adoption-Single-Process.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Blockchain-Hyperledger-Use-Cases-Robert-Boyd-Adoption-Single-Process.jpg\" alt=\"Blockchain Hyperledger Use Cases Robert Boyd Adoption Single Process\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15854\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the context of Verified by Visa, he mentioned that &#8220;everyday there were literally thousands of batch files between the providers of 3DSecure, the issuing banks, and the acquiring banks.&#8221; So, if there was just one queue where everybody could read and write from, then &#8220;it would save hundreds of batch files&#8221; and hundreds of instances of working out each and every process.<\/p>\n<p>Moving on to another use case, Robert explained how blockchain could improve a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peer-to-peer_lending\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">peer-to-peer lending<\/a> by extending its coverage to multiple investors, lending platforms, and partner banks. This would allow the participants to &#8220;mix and match their portfolios.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Blockchain-Hyperledger-Use-Cases-Robert-Boyd-Adoption-Single-Product-Peer-to-peer-Lending.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Blockchain-Hyperledger-Use-Cases-Robert-Boyd-Adoption-Single-Product-Peer-to-peer-Lending.jpg\" alt=\"Blockchain Hyperledger Use Cases Robert Boyd Adoption Single Product Peer-to-peer Lending\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15857\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Where_this_can_be_applied\"><\/span>Where this can be applied<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Robert pointed out general finance processes where the single-process model could be adopted.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Securities processes<\/strong><\/li>\n<ul>\n<li type=circle style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">Trading and settlement, depository, lending, portfolio creation and balancing, and securitization processes have proofs-of-concept in the works that could lead to adoption.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li><strong>Global payments<\/strong><\/li>\n<ul>\n<li type=circle>SWIFT rewrite of global payments and settlements systems based on need for more transparency and better security may lead to adoption.<\/li>\n<li type=circle style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">SWIFT&#8217;s reluctance opens the door for another global payment system to become a blockchain early adopter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li><strong>Regulatory reporting<\/strong><\/li>\n<ul>\n<li type=circle>Proof-of-delivery (nonrepudiation) and timestamping.<\/li>\n<li type=circle style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">Know-Your-Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money-Laundering (AML) components of all financial processes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li><strong>Regulatory arbitrage and avoidance<\/strong><\/li>\n<ul>\n<li type=circle>Any process with highly variable regulatory and compliance costs could adopt blockchain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Imagine a world where everybody was honest, transparent, accurate, never changed their mind, and never tried to be somebody else&#8230;Blockchain gives you the tools for making the kind of thing possible.&#8221; \u2014Robert Boyd<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Apart from financial processes, there are financial organizations that could look to adopt blockchain:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Integrated financial institutions<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li type=circle>&#8220;On Us&#8221; credit card processing<\/li>\n<li type=circle style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">Bank loan and payment processing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">Multi-tenant banking platform vendors<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\">Payment card schemes (Visa, MasterCard, etc.)<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 6px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Computer-integrated_manufacturing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Integrated Manufacturing<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_about_non-financial_use\"><\/span>What about non-financial use?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Robert mentioned <a href=\"https:\/\/gomedici.com\/an-overview-of-blockchain-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Let&#8217;s Talk Payments<\/a>, where he found some use cases. According to him, &#8220;digging dipper into the non-financial use cases, they all look like publish and subscribe integration queues.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>With blockchains serving this way, Robert concludes that, <i>&#8220;we can dial down the need for trust in third parties to do quite so much error and exception processing for us and keep it all in the blockchain.&#8221;<\/i> Although one always needs trust in third parties, he believes that <i>&#8220;maybe they become more the keeper of the blockchain as a way of having trust within the community.&#8221;<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Want_details_Watch_the_video\"><\/span>Want details?
