Watch the video!<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-3'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-7\" href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/when-will-blockchain-be-massively-adopted-and-how-to-boost-the-process\/#Further_reading\" >Further reading<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-3'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/when-will-blockchain-be-massively-adopted-and-how-to-boost-the-process\/#About_the_experts\" >About the experts<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Impatience_how_much_waiting\"><\/span>Impatience: how much waiting?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Blockchain may transform the financial services industry, but not just yet.<\/p>\n<p>That was the primary point of view expressed by panelists at a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/Hyperledger-SF-Bay\/events\/229797244\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cBlockchain in Finance\u201d<\/a> meetup in Silicon Valley, which was hosted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/renatco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Renat Khasanshyn<\/a>, CEO at Altoros.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/kathryn-white-12874616\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kathryn White<\/a>, a San Francisco-based Innovation Consultant with the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), noted that \u201cit&#8217;s so early\u201d in the blockchain era, yet there&#8217;s already an impatience to get things moving more quickly. \u201cSo many people have gone from not knowing what blockchain is to (demanding) &#8216;what can it do?&#8217;\u201d she noted.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Blockchain-in-Finance-Panel-Kathryn-White-Chris-Finan-Patrick-Schilz-Renat-Khasanshyn-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Blockchain-in-Finance-Panel-Kathryn-White-Chris-Finan-Patrick-Schilz-Renat-Khasanshyn-1.jpg\" alt=\"Blockchain in Finance Panel Kathryn White Chris Finan Patrick Schilz Renat Khasanshyn 1\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15765\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hk.linkedin.com\/in\/pschilz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrick Schilz<\/a>, Blockchain Entrepreneur at String\u2014the autonomous finance startup company, seconded that notion, saying \u201cpeople demanding requirements about what can we make of (blockchain) must remember it&#8217;s still very early.\u201d In any case, he said, \u201cblockchain is (often) still in an experimental stage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/cfinan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Finan<\/a>, Co-Founder and CEO of the blockchain-focused Manifold Technology, said he believed we&#8217;re \u201c<strong>five to 10 years<\/strong> out for mass (blockchain) adoption.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Involving_a_larger_group_in_adoption\"><\/span>Involving a larger group in adoption<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Renat asked the panelists whether \u201csmall successes\u201d should be the focus today, so that early adopters can validate their faith in blockchain with company management. The panelists agreed this should be the focus, while also noting the difficulty in doing things on a larger, collaborative scale.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick noted the odd dynamic of how a first-mover advantage needs to be a collaborative one with blockchain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need a business unit that&#8217;s ready to go fully engaged,\u201d Chris said. \u201cAnd you have to be able to speak in the language of the bank.\u201d He also noted the \u201cn-squared problem of the network effect\u201d in trying to work with \u201cmassive consortia\u201d instead of a single institution.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Proving_out_small_use_cases\"><\/span>Proving out small use cases<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>For Kathryn, \u201cunderstanding use cases is the key, so the next step is to start with a very simple one and prove it out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Chris also said Manifold is grabbing \u201csome low-hanging fruit\u201d by working with RBS to improve its rewards program through instantaneous account synchronization across the settlement process. \u201cThis is something that regulators don&#8217;t worry about and something that won&#8217;t disrupt the bank&#8217;s existing IT infrastructures,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Blockchain-in-Finance-Panel-Kathryn-White-Chris-Finan-Patrick-Schilz-Renat-Khasanshyn-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Blockchain-in-Finance-Panel-Kathryn-White-Chris-Finan-Patrick-Schilz-Renat-Khasanshyn-2.jpg\" alt=\"Blockchain in Finance Panel Kathryn White Chris Finan Patrick Schilz Renat Khasanshyn 2\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15766\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Understanding use cases is the key.&#8221; \u2014Kathryn White, RBS<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIt may be counterproductive to seek use cases for blockchain outside basic financial services at this point,\u201d Kathryn noted. \u201cThere needs to be consistency with multiple parties and an agreement across them. It&#8217;s not necessary to do things exactly the same way, as long as they can play together.\u201d She said she thinks there will be other opportunities within RBS in the area of customer service.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Learn_in_practice\"><\/span>Learn in practice<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Chris warned attendees to \u201cunderstand the difference between theory and practice\u201d and to beware of \u201cthe blockchain-industrial complex,\u201d echoing President Eisenhower&#8217;s original invocation of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Military%E2%80%93industrial_complex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the military-industrial complex<\/a>. It seems that with blockchain,  if your competitor is using it, you need to figure out how to cooperate rather than compete.<\/p>\n<p>In this context, though, Chris mentions the problem of getting a large group all moving in the right direction. Over the long haul, this must happen. Single-company blockchain use cases, such as the one mentioned above, are great for customer-facing ideas. For back-end settlement in financial services, though, a single-company blockchain makes the sound of one hand clapping.<\/p>\n<p>Kathryn pointed out that separate blockchains don\u2019t need to be identical. This mirrors what\u2019s going on in the overall world of blockchain: there are separate, intense blockchain-creation efforts by Ripple, R3, and Ethereum, as well as the very open approach of the <a href='https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/tag\/hyperledger\/'>Hyperledger<\/a> project, which may end up being the OpenStack of blockchains.<\/p>\n<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Want_details_Watch_the_video\"><\/span>Want details?
