Howie<\/a>, and Blockchain Capital\u2019s Venture Captalist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jg1578\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jeremy Gardner<\/a>. Watch the video!<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-3'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-9\" href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/hyperledgerblockchain-requirements-adoption-bottlenecks-finance-real-estate\/#Related_reading\" >Related reading<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-3'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-10\" href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/hyperledgerblockchain-requirements-adoption-bottlenecks-finance-real-estate\/#About_the_speakers\" >About the speakers<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Clearing_up_the_blockchain_confusion\"><\/span>Clearing up the blockchain confusion<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Renat begins the discussion by asking each of the speakers about their individual experiences with blockchain technology.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Hyperledger-Blockchain-requirements-and-adoption-bottlenecks-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Hyperledger-Blockchain-requirements-and-adoption-bottlenecks-2.jpg\" alt=\"Hyperledger Blockchain requirements and adoption bottlenecks 2\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14732\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve only been involved with open source since 2002,\u201d says Ryan Singer. \u201cLooking at what clients have been talking about, there\u2019s a lot of confusion among everybody about what blockchain is and why they want to have a blockchain strategy and what it means to have a blockchain strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cI feel like a lot of this confusion has deliberately been encouraged by the press.\u201d<br \/>\n\u2014Ryan Singer, CEO, Blockchain Clearing<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ryan explains his statement by going back to the very origin of blockchain, which is Bitcoin.<\/p>\n<p>When Satoshi Nakamoto, creator of Bitcoin, released the <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoin.org\/bitcoin.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">white paper<\/a>, it \u201cintroduced Bitcoin as an e-money system with the blockchain concept as a way to be able to tell what can be for what and then choose blocks as the way to order transactions.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cIf you search the Bitcoin white paper for the term blockchain the way it\u2019s commonly styled with no space, you\u2019re not going to find it.\u201d \u2014Ryan Singer, CEO, Blockchain Clearing<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ryan adds to the explanation further with an analogy between the creation of DNS and the creation of blockchain stating, \u201cI like describing it like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.isc.org\/bind\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BIND<\/a> in DNS, where DNS was not a thing people designed. People designed BIND, a software for being able to resolve the differences in IP addresses and DNS emerged as a standard in the same way that \u2018IBM compatible\u2019 emerged as a standard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf your software could interact with BIND then it was good enough for DNS. In a lot of ways, if your software can interact with Bitcoin Core then it was good enough for Bitcoin which a lot of people call the blockchain,\u201d says Ryan. \u201cThere was never a technical standard first. The press, in their attempt to run away from Bitcoin as fast as possible, have created a false myth that has basically penetrated everybody who says they want a blockchain strategy that doesn\u2019t allow Bitcoin to transact with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Blockchain_in_real_estate\"><\/span>Blockchain in real estate<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Renat follows up on the initial experience thread with David J. Howie and how blockchain technology factors in or can be a factor in real estate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been following the blockchain space for a little bit now so I\u2019m still learning,\u201d says David. \u201cHow I can kind of see it trickling into my industry is that [real estate] is highly regulated.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Hyperledger-Blockchain-requirements-and-adoption-bottlenecks-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Hyperledger-Blockchain-requirements-and-adoption-bottlenecks-3.jpg\" alt=\"Hyperledger Blockchain requirements and adoption bottlenecks 3\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14733\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In real estate, there\u2019s not just one license you need to have to be able to practice. You have to have a license if you want to practice in a particular jurisdiction. You have to have a license if you want to practice in multiple areas within a state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of inefficiencies in that area alone,\u201d explains David. \u201cThere\u2019s actually a movement going on right now where the National Association of Realtors is trying to form one centralized <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nar.realtor\/nar-doj-settlement\/multiple-listing-service-mls-what-is-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MLS (Multiple Listing Service)<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cRight now, there\u2019s about 400 MLS which is crazy. I see a lot of blockchain applications in there.\u201d \u2014David J. Howie, CFO, ACERRO<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Another area in real estate that could use blockchain is in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/t\/title_insurance.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">title insurance<\/a> business, \u201cwhere 12B USD was spent in the US alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEssentially what you\u2019re paying for is the labor and the research making sure there is no fraud in your chain of title and that the person who\u2019s conveying the title to you and selling the property is actually able to do that,\u201d says David. \u201cI think the blockchain is definitely an interesting use case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Early_stumbles_for_blockchain\"><\/span>Early stumbles for blockchain<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Asked the same question, Jeremy Gardner relayed his experience with blockchain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was one of the first people who thought the blockchain was really going to captivate people and sure enough that\u2019s really the evolution we\u2019ve seen because it enables more than just money,\u201d says Jeremy. \u201cAs Ryan said, that was never the original intention\u2014the word blockchain never shows in the original white paper. I think this is a healthy evolution.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;There\u2019s going to be a lot of stumbling early on as people start to play around with this technology.&#8221; \u2014Jeremy Gardner, Venture Capitalist, Blockchain Capital<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Jeremy points out that the top companies aren\u2019t that far ahead when it comes to blockchain technology. \u201cWe talk to Fortune 100 companies all the time and they don\u2019t really know [what\u2019s going on] and that\u2019s fine. They\u2019re going to learn, but I think at the end of the day, we\u2019re going to find that the use cases for the blockchain are slightly more limited than we think they are now and in other ways it\u2019s going to be far more expansive as we dig deeper into the technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Hyperledger-Blockchain-requirements-and-adoption-bottlenecks-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Hyperledger-Blockchain-requirements-and-adoption-bottlenecks-1.jpg\" alt=\"Hyperledger Blockchain requirements and adoption bottlenecks 1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14736\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Requirements_for_blockchain_use_cases\"><\/span>Requirements for blockchain use cases<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Moving on to use case requirements, Renat asks the group regarding their take on rules or formulae that would apply to potential blockchain use cases.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Blockchain solutions need to be 10x better than the current solution in the world of venture capital.<\/li>\n<li>Communicate with the experts of whatever industry is being disrupted.<\/li>\n<li>Find markets where much of the power is captured by an anti-innovation gatekeeper.<\/li>\n<li>Look for technology in that market has not being keeping pace with technology in general.<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>Industries that don\u2019t use the cloud.<\/li>\n<li>Industries that have to insure against matters of fact.<\/li>\n<li>Industries where there\u2019s an arbitrary rule of man instead of rule of law keeping people out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cIt has to be 10x better because it\u2019s so fundamentally disruptive to traditional business processes and if your solution is not exponentially better that what is currently provided, there\u2019s no way large enterprise customers are going to adopt.\u201d \u2014Jeremy Gardner, Venture Capitalist, Blockchain Capital<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Hyperledger-Blockchain-requirements-and-adoption-bottlenecks-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Hyperledger-Blockchain-requirements-and-adoption-bottlenecks-4.jpg\" alt=\"Hyperledger Blockchain requirements and adoption bottlenecks 4\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14739\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWhat you\u2019re looking for are scenarios where the market is suffering as a result of the gatekeeper and decentralizing the trust and disintermediating that gatekeeper will create such amazing value that people would rather join this open market than do the much easier thing of working with the current infrastructure.\u201d \u2014Ryan Singer, CEO, Blockchain Clearing<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"An_existing_blockchain_use_case\"><\/span>An existing blockchain use case<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>As an example use case, Ryan brings up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitpagos.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bitpagos<\/a>, a company that helps merchants in Argentina take foreign credit cards which they then pay out in Bitcoin.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Hyperledger-Blockchain-requirements-and-adoption-bottlenecks-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Hyperledger-Blockchain-requirements-and-adoption-bottlenecks-5.jpg\" alt=\"Hyperledger Blockchain requirements and adoption bottlenecks 5\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14740\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe gatekeeper for the Argentinian banking system basically completely isolates Argentinian business people from the world altogether and completely controls them and causes incredible social damage,\u201d says Ryan. \u201cSo by cutting that out, giving it a more reasonable regulatory scheme and then just pushing the Bitcoin which the gatekeepers can\u2019t control creates incredible amounts of value.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Real_estate_blockchain_limitations_and_a_way_forward\"><\/span>Real estate blockchain limitations and a way forward<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The escrow companies act as the gatekeepers in the world of real estate. They are regulated by the patriot act and anti-money laundering policies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t use Bitcoin currently to buy real estate. You have to use US dollars,\u201d says David. \u201cThat\u2019s a challenge in my industry, so besides using blockchain as an asset class for payment, I think blockchain can be used in other ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Hyperledger-Blockchain-requirements-and-adoption-bottlenecks-6.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Hyperledger-Blockchain-requirements-and-adoption-bottlenecks-6.jpg\" alt=\"Hyperledger Blockchain requirements and adoption bottlenecks 6\" width=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14741\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As mentioned before, there are about 400 different MLS in real estate. MLS are private companies that associate with a global association of realtors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s this movement to put them all together and have one central MLS,\u201d says David. \u201cWith the Hyperledger Project and the whole permissioned [network] built into it, that\u2019s perfect for this industry because you have to have a license, so there has to be some kind of authentication.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Blockchain_requirements_and_adoption_bottlenecks\"><\/span>Blockchain requirements and adoption bottlenecks<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The requirements for adoption of blockchain in the varying industries boiled down to these few key factors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Expert knowledge.<\/strong> You need to know the business that you\u2019re working on at least having advisors that actually know whatever industry you\u2019re trying to start a company in.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cYou need to know the laws in order to make sure that you don\u2019t break them and in order to innovate around them.\u201d \u2014Jeremy Gardner, Venture Capitalist, Blockchain Capital<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Connections.<\/strong> You need to know the right people you need to lobby your solution to.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe more powerful the gatekeeper is, the more legitimate economic activity they\u2019re preventing.\u201d \u2014Ryan Singer, CEO, Blockchain Clearing<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><strong>Most disruption.<\/strong> Seek out the most regulated markets and the most powerful markets then find a way to play a different game.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><strong>Regulation.<\/strong> Regulation needs to change to allow the use of different technology or new tools that make the process run faster.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cEven if you do a 30 day escrow or 7 day escrow on cash, it\u2019s still going to take time for all these different things to happen. Speeding up that process is going to add value so there\u2019s a lot of room for innovation.\u201d \u2014David J.
