margin: 0px 35px 0px 35px;\" width=\"150\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-13801\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Fabric incubation comes at the end of an intense, multi-week discussion within Hyperledger\u2019s Technical Steering Committee (TSC) and other community members.<\/p>\n<p>It combines proposed contributions from IBM and DAH, as first described by DAH\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/robert-fajta-9207312b\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Fajta<\/a> at the end of a multi-day, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/hyperledger-technical-f2f-meeting-draws-crowd-gets-some-work-done\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hyperledger face-to-face (F2F) meeting<\/a> in Brooklyn, New York.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/chrisfer\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Christopher-Ferris-279x300.jpg\" alt=\"Christopher Ferris, IBM\" style=\"border: 0px; margin: 0px 35px 0px 35px;\" width=\"150\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-13808\" \/><\/a> A proposed contribution from a third key player, Blockstream, was excised from what\u2019s turned into the Fabric incubation project as it was deemed redundant with similar contributions from IBM.<\/p>\n<p>The TSC is headed by IBM Distinguished Engineer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/chrisfer\" target=\"_blank\">Christopher Ferris<\/a>, who has a long history as a key influencer of open standards.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hyperledger.org\/blog\/2020\/05\/13\/tsc-approves-hyperledger-cactus-as-new-project\" target=\"_blank\">Other committee members<\/a> come from DAH, Intel, Fujitsu, Hitachi, DTCC, R3, CME, Accenture, JP Morgan, and Deutsche Boerse.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fabric_behind_the_scenes\"><\/span>Fabric: behind the scenes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/tamasblummer\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Tam\u00e1s-Blummer-Chief-Ledger-Architect-Digital-Asset-Holdings.jpg\" alt=\"Tam\u00e1s Blummer, DAH\" style=\"border: 0px; margin: 0px 35px 0px 35px;\" width=\"150\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-13587\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>An attempt to gain unanimous approval in Brooklyn to incubate what has become the Fabric project failed when an Intel representative wanted to see the proposal in writing. At a TSC conference call the following week, there was a drawn-out discussion among attendees about the proposed incubation as well as the nature of an incubation itself.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/christophera\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Christopher-Allen.jpg\" alt=\"Christopher Allen, Blockstream\" style=\"border: 0px; margin: 0px 35px 0px 35px;\" width=\"150\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-13805\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Separately, DAH executive an TSC member <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/tamasblummer\" target=\"_blank\">Tam\u00e1s Blummer<\/a> outlined his company\u2019s proposed contribution, as we\u2019ve previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/digital-asset-contributes-an-enterprise-blockchain-server-to-hyperledger\/\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Notable in the post-Brooklyn discussions has been the voice of newly hired Blockstream Principal Architect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/christophera\" target=\"_blank\">Christopher Allen,<\/a> a prominent industry figure who\u2019s been focusing on Internet identity and trust in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Formal_document_and_technical_steps\"><\/span>Formal document and technical steps<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The Fabric proposal has now been outlined in a formal document, with a stated goal to \u201cCreate a merged repository of the IBM and DAH contributions based on the successful experiment implemented at the F2F hackathon hosted by JPMC in NYC week of March 21, 2016 and advance that base to the point of formal evaluation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A number of steps need to be taken to deliver a robust implementation, according to the document. As they are addressed, specifics will be published as github issues against the repository. The issues are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Measuring and optimizing<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>Throughput, latency<\/li>\n<li>Memory, CPU, storage, usage, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li>Storage strategy<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>Hot storage, archive, pruning<\/li>\n<li>Flexible deployment layouts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li>What goes to which process<\/li>\n<li>What is deployed in DMZ vs. internal network<\/li>\n<li>Is using Docker images allowed?<\/li>\n<li>Customer specific integration and configuration<\/li>\n<li>Monitoring<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The complete <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1XECRVN9hXGrjAjysrnuNSdggzAKYm6XESR6KmABwhkE\/edit\" target=\"_blank\">document<\/a> is also viewable to anyone who\u2019s interested in it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Out_of_the_shadows\"><\/span>Out of the shadows<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The world of blockchain came born shrouded in the mysterious world of Bitcoin, the (in)famous cryptocurrency with a capital C. Bitcoin has its own foundation, with its own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/markets\/2015\/12\/15\/two-board-members-exit-as-bitcoin-foundation-seeks-funding\/\" target=\"_blank\">unique history.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hyperledger is something different altogether, even as several of its initial use cases will address the giant, global financial services markets.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Many_moving_parts\"><\/span>Many moving parts<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>So separating blockchain from Bitcoin is the first mental step one must take to see blockchain\u2019s potential. The project has that familiar, tense undercurrent of companies large and small battling for technical leadership and community mindshare within the context of an open, transparent project.<\/p>\n<p>The use of blockchain holds the potential to define global IT security for the next generation. It also has the potential to spawn not only new cryptocurrencies, which operate outside the control of governments and pesky institutions, but also create secure, new, major segments of a collaborative, shared global economy.<\/p>\n<p>As one executive told me, \u201cthink of Uber without Uber,\u201d meaning think of Uber\u2019s infrastructure and shared-economy vision but substitute any number of products and services for the cars.<\/p>\n<p>Add to that the specter of potential competitors such as Ethereum and the tremendously dynamic nature of Hyperledger\u2019s evolution so far\u2014something which we can imagine will continue for a while\u2014then a little tension among members of the nascent Hyperledger community comes as no
