Read more details in <a href=\"https:\/\/tanzu.vmware.com\/content\/blog\/pivotal-cloud-foundry-1-6-now-available\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this blog post<\/a> by Pivotal.<\/p>\n<p>3) Microsoft <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/blog\/try-cloud-foundry-on-azure-today\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a> general availability of the BOSH Cloud Provider Interface (CPI) for Azure. (Recently, we provided <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/cloud-foundry-on-microsoft-azure\/\">an overview<\/a> of Microsoft&#8217;s initiative, summarizing what&#8217;s been done for the 2nd preview, how it works, high-level architecture, etc.)<\/p>\n<p>4) SAP to take the project lead for OpenStack CPI starting in 2016; SUSE to collaborate with SAP on this activity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Making_of_a_Cloud-native_Platform\"><\/span>The Making of a Cloud-native Platform<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>During the opening talk, Sam Ramji, CEO of the CF Foundation, spoke about how PaaS revolutionizes businesses, presented the new CF logo, and made a couple of small announcements.<\/p>\n<p>Sam highlighted the importance of innovation, as since 2000, 52% of the Fortune 500 companies are no longer on the list. As in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/continuous-innovation-as-a-new-business-pattern\/\">previous talks<\/a>, he urged enterprises to shift from the &#8220;waterscrumfall&#8221; approach\u2014a situation when the CD part is missing in the CI\u2013CD\u2013CI pipeline.<\/p>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/cloud-foundry-summit-in-berlin-2015-sam-ramji-digital-innovation.jpg\" alt=\"cloud-foundry-summit-in-berlin-2015-sam-ramji-digital-innovation\" width=\"600\" height=\"360\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11088\" \/><br \/>\n<em>&#8220;Borrowing from Toyota&#8217;s lean approach, we are rightsizing the digital innovation.&#8221; \u2014Sam Ramji<\/em><\/center><\/p>\n<p>The Foundation is also working on certification for developers and CF software, so that users can be sure their apps are compatible with all CF-based systems.<\/p>\n<p><center><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/cloud-foundry-summit-berlin-2015-sam-ramji-devops-certification-1.jpg\" alt=\"cloud-foundry-summit-berlin-2015-sam-ramji-devops-certification-1\" width=\"640\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11076\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p>He also revealed some figures: for instance, 60% of Cloud Foundry deployments are on OpenStack. Finally, Sam elaborated on importance of sharing and confirmed that the foundation is planning to host three CF Summits per year: in USA, Europe, and Asia.<\/p>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/cloud-founry-summit-in-berlin-2015-sam-ramji-sharing-by-default-v2-1024x664.jpg\" alt=\"cloud-founry-summit-in-berlin-2015-sam-ramji-sharing-by-default-v2\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" class=\"alignnone size-full\"\/><br \/>\n<em>&#8220;The new baseline is sharing by default.&#8221; \u2014Sam Ramji, the CF Foundation<\/em><\/center><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Innovate_Faster_with_a_Cloud-enabled_Enterprise\"><\/span>Innovate Faster with a Cloud-enabled Enterprise<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The talk by Dirk Basenach from SAP was on open-source cloud technologies in the enterprise and the benefits of cloud platforms, such as speed, better quality, low entry barriers, no vendor lock-ins, etc.<\/p>\n<p><center><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/cloud-foundry-summit-berlin-2015-sap-keynote-dirk-basenach.jpg\" alt=\"cloud-foundry-summit-berlin-2015-sap-keynote-dirk-basenach\" width=\"640\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11230\" \/><br \/>\n<em>&#8220;We think an open cloud platform is a must.&#8221; \u2014Dirk Basenach, SAP<\/em><\/center><\/p>\n<p>He shared some details on how the SAP HANA cloud platform is implemented using CF. On the infrastructure level, SAP decided to move all services to OpenStack, so that they can select any hardware vendor (a competitive advantage).<\/p>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/cloud-foundry-summit-berlin-2015-sap-keynote-hana-cloud-platform-1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"cloud-foundry-summit-berlin-2015-sap-keynote-hana-cloud-platform\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-11003\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p>SAP has made a commitment to invest heavily in the BOSH OpenStack CPI, along with SUSE.<\/p>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/cloud-foundry-summit-berlin-2015-sap-keynote-openstack-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"cloud-foundry-summit-berlin-2015-sap-keynote-openstack\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-11004\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p>In the upcoming collaboration with SUSE on OpenStack CPI, SAP is planning to focus on: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>adoption of OpenStack distros and features<\/li>\n<li>automated tests and benchmarks for the latest OpenStack releases<\/li>\n<li>security and auditing<\/li>\n<li>ease of use and first user experience<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/cloud-foundry-summit-berlin-2015-sap-keynote-focus-1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"cloud-foundry-summit-berlin-2015-sap-keynote-focus\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-11002\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Open source is something our customers demand from us. For instance, in the infrastructure-centric model, ops and devs have conflicts on the surface of databases and web servers. <\/p>\n<p><center><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/cloud-foundry-summit-berlin-2015-keynote-cornelia-davis-infrastructure-centric-operations.jpg\" alt=\"cloud-foundry-summit-berlin-2015-keynote-cornelia-davis-infrastructure-centric-operations\" width=\"640\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11064\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>&#8220;The platform not only enables transformation but drives transformation as well.&#8221; \u2014Cornelia Davis<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Cornelia used several real-life examples to demonstrate how CF boosts productivity and innovation by driving DevOps and providing the right level of abstraction.<\/p>\n<p><center><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/cloud-foundry-summit-berlin-2015-keynote-cornelia-davis-application-centric-operations.jpg\" alt=\"cloud-foundry-summit-berlin-2015-keynote-cornelia-davis-application-centric-operations\" width=\"640\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11063\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Cloud Foundry provides the right level of abstraction, making arcane knowledge of infrastructure unnecessary.&#8221; \u2014Cornelia Davis, Pivotal<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The port binding failure and applying CVE are two nice examples from Cornelia explaining problems coming out in lack of proper abstractions and separation of concerns. The selected A-level candidates went through a six-week training program to become level A+ CF contributors.<\/p>\n<p><center><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/cloud-foundry-summit-berlin-brian-gallagher-164923.jpg\" alt=\"cloud-foundry-summit-berlin-brian-gallagher-164923\" width=\"640\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11226\" \/><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<p>Brian Gallagher also mentioned some of EMC\u2019s best practices for working on projects and motivating staff.<\/p>\n<p><center><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/cloud-foundry-summit-in-berlin-2015-emc-dojo.jpg\" alt=\"cloud-foundry-summit-in-berlin-2015-emc-dojo\" width=\"640\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11067\" \/><br \/>\n<em>&#8220;What this community has done is put the best of the best together.&#8221; \u2014Brian Gallagher, EMC<\/em><\/center><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Lightning_talks\"><\/span>Lightning talks<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The keynotes were followed by six lightning talks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Julian Fischer<\/strong> shared the experience of using CF at Anynines. According to Julian, local development is still a pain. He suggested to learn from Hashicorp&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/hashicorp\/otto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Otto<\/a> project\u2014the successor to Vagrant.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cPlatform-as-a-Service changed our lives and tremendously made things better.\u201d \u2014Julian Fisher<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Michael Behrendt<\/strong> of IBM suggested that university students should be given access to CF to help the community grow and also said a few words about the Bluemix team.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>&#8220;Don&#8217;t trash unneeded code. Sharing is caring!&#8221; \u2014Michael Behrendt, IBM<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Robert Moss<\/strong> of CloudSoft continued with a keynote on managing corporate data warehouses using CF services. He described how the Apache Brooklyn service broker &#8220;bridges CF to existing data stores.&#8221; This broker is a way to go if you cannot find a necessary service in the CF ecosystem. (Read our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/cf-after-dark-bridging-brooklyn\/\">overview<\/a> of how the CF plugin for Apache Brooklyn simplifies the creation of services by using blueprints.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Paula Kennedy\u2019s<\/strong> talk on building teams at CloudCredo emphasized the importance of diversity when working with customers and collaborating inside one organization.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>&#8220;To best serve the market, we need to employ the market.&#8221; \u2014Paula Kennedy, CloudCredo<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Agim Emruli<\/strong>, mimacom, discussed the lessons learned from real-life Pivotal CF deployments in various industries.<\/p>\n<p>In the closing talk, &#8220;Cloud Foundry\u2014as Sweet as Chocolate,&#8221; <strong>Marco Hochstrasser<\/strong> made some \u201cculinary allusions\u201d between CF and Swiss chocolate.
